Download The Last Campfire (free demo) - melancholic puzzle

With the game’s launch on Steam in October 2021, the developers have chosen to give a free demo of the game to anyone who has Steam installed. The game is also out on a plethora of other platforms and in several languages so as many people as possible can experience the game and its sad but beautiful story.

Uncover a world of mystery in your search for something to light the last campfire

The Last Campfire is an adventure game with designed puzzles along the way, to act as content-gates and natural narrative and gameplay based progressors.

During this adventure, a story of a lost Ember trapped in a puzzling world unfolds before you, in the style of a puzzle adventure game.

It is your duty, along with Ember, to discover a purpose for why they are alone in the world, and how you can help them make their way through this puzzling place, searching for a meaning with life - and ostensibly, death, as the two are intertwined.

In other words, you get to walk around a world unlike our own and solve puzzles in order to make the story move along.

Cute artstyle with a beautiful soundtrack, good writing and voice acting

The art style is reminiscent of other games dealing with similar themes such as Kena: Bridge of Spirits, except more indie feeling. Everything is brightly colored or contrasted almost to the extreme (a positive trait in our opinion). The characters do not have voices but still manage to incite emotions in the player.

The only voice heard in the game is the female narrator who guides you with an English accent with slight hints of a Scandinavian stress and pitch accent on top of it, which gives a sense of authenticity and mysticism to the vocal performance. The narrative is well paced and executed, and the soundtrack will give you chills.

Created by an ambitious, small studio in England

In 2020, Hello Games created a new game in their line-up of popular titles. Following the success of No Man’s Sky in 2016, this 2020 entry has the mark of Hello Games’ production all over it.

The Last Campfire is a trade mark or registered trade mark of the studio - and in a beautiful way, symbolizes the team’s ups and downs over the years, in its handling of themes of loss, isolation, and overcoming obstacles in puzzling ways. The team started out as a small group of four ambitious individuals in a room above a tile shop, before moving to a leaking shed, and now have some truly AAA quality games under their belt - a very impressive story.

A rather short game that nevertheless manages to handle some hard-hitting topics

One of the few drawbacks of The Last Campfire is the game’s limited amount of playtime. The game is rather short, sitting at about 4-6 hours of active play before completion (which, of course, is also reflected in the game’s lower price point compared to other games).

That being said, the game still manages to do quite a lot with its storytelling and emotional atmosphere, in that short amount of time.

Going into the game, not expecting it to be a long title you can spend multiple days on, makes the game an overall better experience rather than a letdown.

Accessibility across devices and languages

There are various ways of experiencing the game, no matter who you are and what you prefer.

You can choose from various language options, including (but not limited to) English, Simplified Chinese, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian, and French.

The game is also out on multiple platforms:

Download the game for your iPhone if you have an Apple Arcade subscription.

The Nintendo Switch has received a version of this game - and so has the Playstation and Xbox consoles, to great avail.

Conclusion

This game is a story that truly tugs on your heartstrings - the music has been created with a mystical feel in mind, as is typical for games of this nature. The story itself deals with heavy themes of death, grief, loss, and acceptance - but with the accompanying narrating voice, cute graphics, and edifying music accompaniment, the game does not make you feel depressed and sad, instead it leaves you feeling uplifted and content.
