Debian

Debian – The most stable and classic Linux operating system.

Debian is one of the oldest and most respected Linux distributions. It forms the foundation for many popular systems — including Ubuntu and Linux Mint — and is known for its extreme stability, freedom-focused philosophy, and vast software catalog.

Debian primarily targets users who want full control, a clean system without commercial influence, and maximum stability — whether for servers or desktop computers.

⚙️ Features and system architecture

Debian uses the .deb package system with the classic APT tool and offers access to one of the world’s largest software repositories. During installation, you can choose your desktop environment: GNOME, KDE, XFCE, LXQt, MATE, and more.

The installation is a bit more complex than, for example, on Ubuntu or 1, but far from impossible. You can choose a “netinstall ISO”, which only downloads the necessary packages during setup, or a full ISO with everything included.

Debian can be customized from the ground up — making it popular among developers, system administrators, and Linux purists.

🛡️ Security and stability

Debian has a reputation for being the most stable of all Linux operating systems. New versions are tested for years in the “Testing” and “Unstable” branches before being released as “Stable.” The result is a platform you can rely on — perfect for servers and professional environments.

Updates are frequent but conservative. Security and robustness are prioritized over new features, which makes Debian the opposite of, for example, Fedora.

👶 Is Debian suitable for beginners?

Debian can be used by beginners, but it requires a bit more technical understanding. There’s no flashy “out-of-the-box” experience like in Ubuntu, and you’ll need to install codecs, drivers, and some applications yourself. In return, you’ll learn a lot and gain full control over your system.

👨‍💻 Debian for advanced users and servers

Debian is widely used on web servers, in cloud environments, and as the base for specialized systems. It can run for years without issues and supports ARM, x86, PowerPC, and more platforms.

You can also use the “Testing” branch if you want newer software while still maintaining a high degree of stability.
