RPG games these days have surpassed almost every expectation one could have for the genre. Over time, the stories and plots have improved, the various mechanics have been tweaked and tuned to perfection. This beautiful combination results in superb empathy and enjoyment of the games.

One such example of an Open World RPG series that has evolved in this direction over the years is the Witcher series. With its latest release, the 3, the game has reached new heights, setting the bar for the RPG games of the future, which will most likely be hard to beat.

The heady and captivating story

The Witcher series originally started out as a book series by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, and later by the game company CD Projekt Red, the series has been adapted to the game world, and soon a TV series will also come out of it. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt even went on to win Game of the Year in 2015.

But what kind of world are we entering? What should we expect? The Witcher series is known for having one of the most interesting worlds in the fantasy genre (dark fantasy). The universe mixes classic dungeons and dragons themes with the brutal life of the Middle Ages. A bit a la Game of Thrones, it's not just anyone who has special powers or can practice magic, and those who can must often find themselves in this dark and dark world in chaos.

You play as Geralt of Rivia, a famous Witcher known for his courage, ingenuity and skills. A Witcher is basically a monster hunter / monster hunter who dedicates his life to selling his services to people who have problems with dangerous monsters and who can pay for it.

The special thing about a Witcher is both their upbringing and their biology. Witchers are usually orphaned children that the Witcher Order takes in. They are then mutated genetically to improve their senses and fighting skills. For example, they get cat eyes that make them with sight can observe things that normal people cannot.

Geralt of Rivia notices one day that a Ciri, a young Witcher he has a father-daughter relationship with, is in danger. She is hunted by "The Wild Hunt", a mysterious faction of powerful creatures whose purpose can not be fully discerned in the beginning of the game.

Geralt therefore begins to look for Ciri when she disappeared without a trace years ago. While Geralt follows in her footsteps, you, the player, are allowed to experience the many interesting areas such as Velen, Oxenfurt, White Orchard etc. Each area has its own individual character, but together they have what they all contain traces of where Ciri can be, and a population suffering due to war, political divisions and monsters.

The game's story is expanded through a wide range of DLCs that can be purchased in addition to the game. These include Blood and Wine, Hearts of Stone and many more.

Witcher 3's amazing gameplay

The Witcher 3 is one of those RPG games that lets you play the game almost as you please. Typically known for RPG games, the progression system is based on levels and skill points you can use to change how you play and what Geralt can do.

Each level you advance opens up a skill point that you can place in different "trees", each touching on different aspects of the game.

A Witcher, for example, is also a skilled alchemist, and can make potions that provide the applicable benefit in dangerous situations. But to be able to make the best potions, one must also put skillpoints in the alchemy tree.

If you are more the type who likes to run around with your weapons and do exceptional damage, then you can go down through the combat tree, which allows you to make special and effective attack combinations and which improves your normal attacks.

In addition to these two, there are a number of other trees you can throw your points into to improve more practical things during the game.

A Witcher is also able to practice magic in a limited sense through what are called "signs". There are a number of them that make combat easier and can be indispensable when fighting a powerful monster. Them there are also et skill-tree to.

To achieve levels, and thus also skillpoints, one must go out into the world to do main quests and side quests. Main quests lead you closer to Ciri the further you get, and are part of the main story that you have to go through to complete the game. Side quests are more based on the situation of the local area. For example, it may be a woman in tears who has not seen her husband for several days. Then can choose to help find him, but typically there is always something that has gone horribly wrong. Through side quests one can get armor, money and other useful things for his adventures.

In addition to main and side quests, their are also "Points of interest" on the map when looking around. These are places that hide treasures or enemies that you can kill to get rewards and learn more about the history and condition of the area.

The game for you who will happily spend weeks on completion

Witcher 3 is a game a bit like The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim in terms of the amount of time you can spend on the game before you have experienced and seen everything. Some will even think it is impossible. You can easily spend 100 hours or more and only be about halfway.

Once you have managed the main story, of course, there are also all the DLCs you have to go through. There are a few extra days. So what?

Because there are so many ways to play The Witcher 3 (with the different character combinations you can make and dialogue choices that change the story) there is great replay value. Therefore, it would not be strange if you felt like playing it again, just to see how a Geralt with strong magical abilities plays in relation to a pure battle type.

If you have a lot of free time or a good holiday to burn off, then this is the game for you.

The unique and dark fantasy universe

It's sometimes hard to separate the Witcher series completely from the horror genre. The game is in many respects designed to be dark, scary and everything that comes with it. It is a good and strong mix between the traditional fantasy and the brutal medieval realism that in a beautiful clash creates this dark, depressed and hopeless world.

A world where nothing good is done for free and where everyone is plagued by something that could ultimately cost them their lives. Of course, one can play a Witcher based on this cynical philosophy, but one can also choose to be a white knight in shining armor. It's all about dialogue choices and what one wants to achieve in this world.

Incredibly beautiful graphics and delicious UI that only impresses

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt boasts one of the most beautiful games in game history to date, despite being over 4 years old. It's nothing to laugh at or scoff at.

The game's Polish medieval style comes to life beautifully with the detailed graphics that make a sunrise in Novigrad feel so real, sad but beautiful at the same time. The budget here has not been saved at least.

Sound-wise, the whole world is filled with atmospheric sound effects that can make a city seem like a real city, or a dark forest like a place you probably should not be. The music is also incredibly apt, and really helps to build the perfect atmosphere. Therefore, you are guaranteed a roller coaster of emotions every time you play.

The game's UI is also incredibly well thought out, making it easy and straightforward to keep track of its inventory, skillpoints, and character build.

The combat system is also interesting, and encourages you to use different combinations on your mouse to make special attacks that do more damage. These can also be unlocked with skillpoints.

Alternative games

The Witcher 3 is, as the name implies, the third and final game in the game series The Witcher (trademark of CD Projekt Red). Therefore, you can try to play the other two in the series, to understand 100% where you are in the story when you start on the 3rd. It's not unequivocally necessary, but it's a good idea.

The games have notlargely aged particularly well, but they both can offer interesting moments, and getting enjoyment out of them is not difficult.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is the beginning of a confusing event in which Geralt was mysteriously involved in the murder of his own king: Foltest.

Conclusion

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is everything an action-packed RPG should and should be (and then even with a little more). It's hard to say anything really bad about the game, as all aspects are so well thought out and entertaining to explore. Therefore, there is not much else to do but to warmly recommend it.

The following terms of service and end user license agreement (“EULA”) constitute an agreement between you and CD PROJEKT RED and its affiliates (“CD PROJEKT RED”). This EULA governs your use of Software and Services (as specified below).
For purposes of this EULA "Software" means all software programs distributed, published or otherwise made available by CD PROJEKT RED or its affiliates including, but not limited to mobile software, downloadable/installable software for personal computer, and software accessed by means of a browser or other online communication method. Software also includes updates and upgrades as well as accompanying manual(s), packaging and other written, files, electronic or on-line materials or documentation, and any and all copies of such software and its materials.
“Services” means all services made available by CD PROJEKT RED, including but not limited to services accessed through mobile games, by means of a browser or by other online communication method.
Software and Services are collectively referred to as “CD PROJEKT RED Services”.

2 THIRD PARTY SERVICES
CD PROJEKT RED Services may include links to third party services and/or the third party services may be made available to you via CD PROJEKT RED Services. These services may include, but are not limited to gameplay recording and sharing, social medial connectivity and the like. These services are subject to respective third party terms and conditions. Please study these third party terms and conditions carefully as they constitute an agreement between you and the applicable third party service provider.

3 GENERAL LICENSE CONDITIONS

However, with regards to installable Software that was delivered on a physical storage medium, you may transfer the entire Software and accompanying documentation on a permanent basis to another person as long as you retain no copies (including archival or backup copies) of the Software, accompanying documentation, or any portion or component of the Software accompanying documentation, and the recipient agrees to the terms of this EULA The Software is intended for private use only.
The CD PROJEKT RED Services may include measures to control access to the CD PROJEKT RED Service, prevent unauthorized copies, or otherwise attempt to prevent anyone from exceeding the limited rights and licenses granted under this EULA. Only CD PROJEKT RED Services subject to a valid license can be used to access online services, and download updates and patches. You may not interfere with such access control measures or attempt to disable or circumvent such security features. If you disable or otherwise tamper with the technical protection measures, the CD PROJEKT RED Services will not function properly.
The CD PROJEKT RED Services may allow you to create content, including but not limited to gameplay maps, screenshots or a video of your game play. In exchange for use of the CD PROJEKT RED Services, and to the extent that your contributions through use of the CD PROJEKT RED Services give rise to any copyright, design right or any other intellectual or industrial property right you hereby grant CD PROJEKT RED an exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, fully transferable and sub-licensable worldwide right and license to use your contributions in any way and for any purpose including, but not limited to the rights to reproduce, copy, adapt, modify, perform, display, publish, broadcast, transmit, or otherwise communicate to the public by any means whether now known or unknown and distribute your contributions without any further notice or compensation to you of any kind for the whole duration of protection granted to intellectual and industrial property rights by applicable laws and international conventions. In order for certain features of the CD PROJEKT RED Services to operate properly, you may be required to have and maintain (a) an adequate internet connection and/or (b) a valid and active account with an online service as set forth in the documentation related to CD PROJEKT RED Services. By using the CD PROJEKT RED Services, you acknowledge and agree that third party data transfer fees may apply depending on your data plan. Please consult your carrier for further information. 4 INFORMATION COLLECTION AND USE; PRIVACY POLICY
By installing, accessing or using the CD PROJEKT RED Services, you consent to these information collection and usage terms, including (where applicable) the transfer of data into a country outside of the European Union and/or the European Economic Area or the United States of America.
CD PROJEKT RED respects your privacy rights and recognizes the importance of protecting any information collected about you. CD PROJEKT RED's privacy policy as amended from time to time is available at www.cd-projekt-red.com/privacy ("Privacy Policy") and applicable to this EULA. CD PROJEKT RED’s Privacy Policy defines how, why and to which extent CD PROJEKT RED collects and uses personal and non-personal information in relation to CD PROJEKT RED's products and services. By installing, accessing or using the CD PROJEKT RED Services you explicitly agree with the terms and conditions of CD PROJEKT RED’s Privacy Policy and to any terms and conditions included therein by reference.

5 PAYMENTS AND PURCHASES OF VIRTUAL GOODS
CD PROJEKT RED may license to you certain virtual goods to be used within CD PROJEKT RED Services. Unless otherwise specified, these virtual goods shall be deemed an integral part of the Software. These virtual goods may be licensed both for a fee using “real world money” and without any separate fee, as applicable from time to time. These virtual goods may also be licensed by using third party virtual currency, such as Facebook Credits or by using separate activation codes.
Any and all virtual goods are licensed to you on limited, personal, non-transferable, non-sublicensable and revocable basis and limited only for non-commercial use.
Please note that any payment for licenses for virtual goods or redemption of third party virtual currency is always FINAL AND NON-REFUNDABLE. Also please note that if you purchase Facebook Credits from Facebook, such transaction is governed by the agreement between you and Facebook and CD PROJEKT RED is not a party to the transaction.
CD PROJEKT RED may manage, regulate, control, modify or eliminate virtual goods at any time, with or without notice. CD PROJEKT RED shall have no liability to you or any third party in the event that CD PROJEKT RED exercises any such rights.

6 WARRANTY
6.1 Warranty for Physical software Products
CD PROJEKT RED warrants to you (if you are the initial and original purchaser of the Software) that, to the extent the Software is made available to you on a physical storage medium, the original storage medium holding the Software is free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service for 90 days from the date of purchase. If mandatory legislation in your jurisdiction requires longer in excess to the aforementioned 90 days, the length of the warranty is amended accordingly. If for any reason you find a defect in the physical storage medium during the warranty period, CD PROJEKT RED agrees to replace, free of charge, any physical storage medium and related Software discovered to be defective within the warranty period as long as the Software is currently commercially distributed by CD PROJEKT RED. If the Software is no longer available, CD PROJEKT RED retains the right to substitute a similar piece of Software of equal or greater value. This warranty is limited to the physical storage medium and the Software as originally provided by CD PROJEKT RED and is not applicable to normal wear and tear. This warranty shall not be applicable and shall be void if the defect has arisen through abuse, mistreatment, or neglect. Any implied warranties prescribed by statute are expressly limited to the warranty period described above.
When returning the Software subject to the limited warranty above, please send the original Software only to the CD PROJEKT RED address specified below and include: your name and return address; a photocopy of your dated sales receipt; and a brief note describing the defect and the system on which you are running the Software.
6.2 No other Warranties
NOTWITHSTANDING THE ABOVEMENTIONED WARRANTY FOR PHYSICAL STORAGE MEDIUM SPECIFIED IN SECTION 6.1 ABOVE, AND TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMISSIBLE UNDER APPLICABLE LAW, THE CD PROJEKT RED SERVICES ARE PROVIDED TO YOU “AS IS,” WITH ALL FAULTS, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, WITHOUT PERFORMANCE ASSURANCES OR GUARANTEES OF ANY KIND, AND YOUR USE IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. THE ENTIRE RISK OF SATISFACTORY QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE RESIDES WITH YOU. CD PROJEKT RED, CD PROJEKT RED’S LICENSORS AND CHANNEL PARTNERS DO NOT MAKE, AND HEREBY DISCLAIM, ANY AND ALL EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY WARRANTIES, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF CONDITION, UNINTERRUPTED USE, ACCURACY OF DATA (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOCATION DATA), MERCHANTABILITY, SATISFACTORY QUALITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS, AND WARRANTIES (IF ANY) ARISING FROM A COURSE OF DEALING, USAGE, OR TRADE PRACTICE. CD PROJEKT RED, CD PROJEKT RED’S LICENSORS AND CHANNEL PARTNERS DO NOT WARRANT AGAINST INTERFERENCE WITH YOUR ENJOYMENT OF THE SOFTWARE; THAT THE CD PROJEKT RED SERVICES WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS; THAT OPERATION OF THE CD PROJEKT RED SERVICES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT THE CD PROJEKT RED SERVICES WILL INTEROPERATE OR BE COMPATIBLE WITH ANY OTHER CD PROJEKT RED SERVICES OR THAT ANY ERRORS IN THE CD PROJEKT RED SERVICES WILL BE CORRECTED. NO ORAL OR WRITTEN ADVICE PROVIDED BY CD PROJEKT RED, CD PROJEKT RED’S LICENSORS AND CHANNEL PARTNERS OR ANY AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE SHALL CREATE A WARRANTY. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF OR LIMITATIONS ON IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR THE LIMITATIONS ON THE APPLICABLE STATUTORY RIGHTS OF A CONSUMER, SO SOME OR ALL OF THE ABOVE EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS APPLY ONLY TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW IN THE APPLICABLE JURISDICTION.

7 LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
IN NO EVENT WILL CD PROJEKT RED, CD PROJEKT RED’S AFFILIATES, CD PROJEKT RED’S LICENSORS OR CHANNEL PARTNERS BE LIABLE FOR SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES RESULTING FROM POSSESSION, ACCESS, USE OR MALFUNCTION OF THE CD PROJEKT RED SERVICES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DAMAGES TO PROPERTY, LOSS OF GOODWILL, COMPUTER FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION AND, TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, DAMAGES FOR PERSONAL INJURIES, PROPERTY DAMAGE, LOST PROFITS OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES FROM ANY CAUSES OF ACTION ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THIS EULA OR THE SOFTWARE, WHETHER ARISING IN TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), CONTRACT, STRICT LIABILITY OR OTHERWISE AND WHETHER OR NOT CD PROJEKT RED, CD PROJEKT RED’S LICENSORS OR CHANNEL PARTNERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. FOR PURPOSES OF THIS SECTION 7, CD PROJEKT RED’S LICENSORS AND CHANNEL PARTNERS ARE THIRD PARTY BENEFICIARIES TO THE LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY SPECIFIED HEREIN AND THEY MAY ENFORCE THIS EULA AGAINST YOU.
BECAUSE SOME STATES/COUNTRIES DO NOT ALLOW CERTAIN LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY, THIS LIMITATION OF LIABILITY SHALL APPLY TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW IN THE APPLICABLE JURISDICTION. THIS LIMITATION OF LIABILITY SHALL NOT BE APPLICABLE SOLELY TO THE EXTENT THAT ANY SPECIFIC PROVISION OF THIS LIMITATION OF LIABILITY IS PROHIBITED BY ANY FEDERAL, STATE, OR MUNICIPAL LAW, WHICH CANNOT BE PRE-EMPTED. THIS EULA GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS, AND YOU MAY HAVE OTHER RIGHTS THAT VARY FROM JURISDICTION TO JURISDICTION.
IN NO EVENT SHALL CD PROJEKT RED’S, CD PROJEKT RED’S AFFILIATES’, CD PROJEKT RED’S LICENSORS’ OR CHANNEL PARTNERS’ LIABILITY FOR ALL DAMAGES (EXCEPT AS REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW) EXCEED THE ACTUAL PRICE PAID BY YOU FOR USE OF THE CD PROJEKT RED SERVICES OR FIVE EUROS (EUR 5), WHICHEVER LESS.

8 OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS
TERMINATION: This EULA will terminate automatically if you fail to comply with its terms and conditions. In such event, you must destroy all copies of the Software and all of its component parts and cease and desist from accessing any CD PROJEKT RED Services. With regards to Software delivered on a physical storage medium you can end this EULA by destroying the Software and all copies and reproductions of the Software and deleting and permanently purging the Software from any client server or computer on which it has been installed.
EQUITABLE REMEDIES: You hereby agree that if the terms of this EULA are not specifically observed, CD PROJEKT RED will be irreparably damaged, and therefore you agree that CD PROJEKT RED shall be entitled, without bond, other security or proof of damages, to appropriate equitable remedies with respect to your breach of any of the terms of this EULA, in addition to any other available remedies.
AFFILIATE: For purposes of this EULA, an “affiliate” or CD PROJEKT RED means any legal entity that is directly or indirectly controlled by CD PROJEKT RED for so long as such control lasts. Control shall exist through direct or indirect ownership of more than 50 % of the nominal value of the issued equity share capital or more than 50 % of the shares entitling the holders to vote for the election of the members of the board of directors or persons performing similar functions.
INDEMNITY: You agree to indemnify, defend and hold CD PROJEKT RED, its partners, affiliates, contractors, officers, directors, employees and agents harmless from and against any and all damages, losses and expenses arising directly or indirectly from: (i) your acts and omissions to act in using the CD PROJEKT RED Services pursuant to the terms of the EULA; or (ii) your breach of this EULA.
MISCELLANEOUS: This EULA represents the complete agreement concerning this license between the parties and supersedes all prior agreements and representations between them. CD PROJEKT RED reserves the right, at its discretion, to change, modify, add or remove portions of this EULA by posting the updated EULA on CD PROJEKT RED’s website. You will be deemed to have accepted such changes by continuing to use the CD PROJEKT RED Services. If any provision of this EULA is held to be unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be reformed only to the extent necessary to make it enforceable and the remaining provisions of this EULA shall not be affected.
GOVERNING LAW AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION. This EULA will be governed by the laws of United States of America without reference to its choice of law rules. The United Nations Convention for the International Sale of Goods shall not apply.
Any dispute, controversy or claim arising out of or relating to this EULA or the breach, termination or validity thereof shall be finally settled at CD PROJEKT RED's discretion (i) at your domicile's competent courts; or (ii) by arbitration in accordance with the Rules for Expedited Arbitration of the Arbitration Institute of the American Chamber of Commerce. The arbitration shall be conducted in Sacremento, California, in the English language. YOU AGREE THAT YOU MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST CD PROJEKT RED ONLY IN YOUR INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING.
