There are many image editing and drawing programs out there for creating beautiful images, designs, and animations. If you specifically want to start designing things like logos and posters, a whole new world opens up when you begin working with vector graphics. Unlike raster graphics, vector graphics can be scaled to any size. A great program for vector graphics is Inkscape!

This is our page about Inkscape for macOS. The tool is also available for Windows and Linux, so we also have another page where you can read much more about Inkscape. You can find it by clicking this link.
What are vector graphics?
Before we describe vector graphics, let’s first look at so-called “raster graphics.” For example, when you take a picture with a camera, it’s saved with a specific height and width measured in pixels. If an image isn’t very large (that is, it’s low resolution), it becomes pixelated when you zoom in too far. That’s why it’s a big drawback if you design a logo or a poster in low resolution—you may run into problems when printing it on a large poster.
In a way, vector graphics can be seen as the opposite of raster graphics—you can say goodbye to worries about resolution and pixels! Vector graphics can be scaled up to any size without issues. This makes your vector designs future-proof, as they’ll fit all screen and paper sizes today and for many years to come.

But how do vector graphics work? Adobe has published a really good article comparing raster graphics with vector graphics. You can find it at this link. In short, use raster graphics when editing images and photos, whereas vector graphics are ideal for logos, illustrations, and much more.
Inkscape for Mac compared to other platforms
All the screenshots on this page are actually from the Windows version of Inkscape, but that doesn’t make much difference, as you can expect Inkscape to work roughly the same on all supported operating systems. These are Windows, Mac, and Linux. When updates are released for Inkscape, the program is usually updated on all platforms at the same time.
If you’ve previously used the Windows or Linux version of Inkscape, you can of course expect a few differences on Mac. However, getting used to them shouldn’t take long.
In a way, it’s a huge advantage that Inkscape works the same across so many platforms, because you can keep using Inkscape if one day you buy a new computer with a different operating system. The alternative Adobe Illustrator, described further down the page, for example isn’t currently available for Linux.
Get help with Inkscape
In many ways, Inkscape is a bit more complex than many other image editors. So it may be a good idea to read some user guides or watch a few YouTube videos when getting started if you’ve never used the program before. Fortunately, helpful tutorials are included from the start, which you can find by clicking the Help button in the program.

In addition, we also recommend visiting Inkscape’s official website. They have a section called “Learn,” which you can visit by clicking here. Inside you’ll find written guides to many of the program’s tools and features, plus links to video tutorials on YouTube.
Strong competition from Adobe
Another program in the same category as Inkscape that may also be worth exploring is Adobe Illustrator. Adobe is the company behind apps such as the photo editor Photoshop, and they also offer a tool for designing vector graphics. However, this program costs money and requires a subscription with Adobe. You can start by testing Adobe Illustrator with a free trial.
