Sometimes you need a product key or serial number to activate software. For example, you might have tested a trial version of a PC game, and if you decide to pay for the full version, the product key will appear on the receipt you receive afterward. Don’t throw this key away, because you may need it again later—for instance, if you want to install the game on multiple computers.
If you’ve lost an important product key, consider installing MyKeyFinder. It’s a lightweight Windows utility from the German developer Abelssoft that scans your PC for product keys and serial numbers. What the developer says about the program
On the MyKeyFinder website, which you can visit by clicking this link, you can read more about the software. It explains how the program works and describes its various features.
According to the developer, Abelssoft, MyKeyFinder automatically scans your computer for all the serial numbers and product keys it can find. If the same product key is found in multiple places on your hard drive, duplicates are removed automatically, and when the scan is complete you can either print the list of all found product keys or export it as a PDF document.
You can also manually enter product keys to add a key the software didn’t find, or simply to save it alongside your other product keys for later.
The demo version versus the full version
MyKeyFinder comes in two editions. There’s the demo version, which we tested and which you can download for free. You can read our evaluation a bit further down this page. There’s also a full version you can choose to buy if you want.
We haven’t tried the full version, but it appears to unlock two extra features: scanning your PC for Wi‑Fi passwords for wireless networks, and scanning external hard drives for product keys. The developer notes this can be useful if, for example, you have a drive with a damaged Windows installation.
There are different ways to purchase the full edition of MyKeyFinder, which you can read more about on the program’s website. At the moment, you can get a subscription for €10 per year. You can also buy the latest version as a one‑time purchase for €12.66. The listed prices are excluding VAT.
Our assessment of the demo version
We ran a quick test of the demo version. Here at DLC.dk we constantly test new software to share with our users. MyKeyFinder is quick and easy to install, and we experienced no issues during setup.
Visually, the interface is clean and straightforward, and we found the program very easy to use. When we opened it for the first time, it automatically began scanning the computer. We didn’t have to do anything.
In our test, the program appeared to do what the developer promises. After the product‑key scan finished, we were shown a list of all results, and it was possible to print them or export them to a PDF document.
The demo can also be a bit annoying at times. You can’t use MyKeyFinder without providing your name and email, and every time you close the program a window pops up asking if you want to buy the full version. It’s fair that the developer wants to sell the paid edition, but we’re not sure it’s a good idea for most users to buy it. You can read more in the next section.
Is the full version worth the money?
As mentioned earlier, the full version of MyKeyFinder can scan for Wi‑Fi passwords and search an external hard drive for product keys.
We haven’t tested the full version, but we don’t recommend buying it just because you need a Wi‑Fi password. You can easily find your Wi‑Fi passwords in Windows without installing new software. You can locate the password for your wireless network in the Windows Control Panel. If you’re missing a Wi‑Fi password, follow this guide on Microsoft’s website.
Unfortunately, we don’t know whether the external drive scanning feature is worth the money, since we only tested the demo. If that’s exactly the functionality you need, you’ll of course have to buy the full edition. But before spending money on MyKeyFinder, we recommend trying the free version first so you can get a feel for what the program can do.
