Download Tomb Rumble for free and annihilate your friends

Have you been looking forever for a new, free game to sink your teeth into? Tomb Rumble might just be able to scratch that gaming itch of yours. The game is a new Steam (Valve Corporation) entry and came out on this platform on September 15, 2021, and has already amassed quite the following of dedicated players from around the world.

Your job is to trick and kill the other players as you compete to retrieve ancient treasures in lost areas of the world.

Start out as an adventurer - end up as a cursed monster

When you load the game for the first time, you exist in the world as an adventurer. You look like a pixelated version of Indiana Jones; very on brand.

As you start exploring, you collect gold coins and blue gems. The gems are the ultimate objective of each level - the gold coins can be used to purchase things for your character whereas the gems are showcases of your ability to survive.

You are plopped into a random game, along with a bunch of other characters, and it is now up to all of you to capture the gem while making sure not to die by falling or tripping over the other players and their lethal weapons.

The people behind Tomb Rumble: Atelier 801

Tomb Rumble was developed by Atelier 801, a minor indie gaming company, who nevertheless have quite a few games under their belt by now. You can check out their other games here.

Their other games have a similar vibe to them, offering fast-paced gameplay, interlaced with a colorful palette, supported by contrastive elements which collectively build an atmosphere.

Tomb Rumble is a pixel art PVP MMO platformer game

The game can be described with the words stated above. In other words, Tomb Rumble is a game based on pixel art design where players fight other players in a race against time, over various challenging layouts.

The scale of players is high, which is why it is often regarded as a MMO (massive multiplayer online) experience with PVP (player versus player) combat, set in a 2D platform arena.

Choose whether to play on Mac or Windows - directly from your Steam library

The game is supported on both operating systems. If you would prefer to play this game on your Macbook or iMac (it runs smoothly on these machines, too), then you can simply follow the link to their location on steam

Free to play with optional paid DLC available

Tomb Rumble is completely free to play, if you so choose. The devs also added the option to purchase so-called DLC, which are essentially other monsters you can turn into, once you die.

These have special powers that can be used against the other players - and as you level up each malediction (as the curses are called), you gain new skills. Some of these skills can help you get revenge over people who pushed you off ledges or can slow down players around you so they are unable to make the final jump, and more.

10 dumb ways to die … in a tomb

Actually, there are more than ten ways to die in this game - but all of them are silly. Whether you push other players so they fall in a lava pit and burn alive, or you do not manage a long jump and fall to your death, the game offers many funny moments, especially if you are playing with friends.

You can also lure other players into deadly traps or throw weapons in their faces.

Death loses its meaning in a way, actually very similar to Deathloop, in the sense that death becomes a canonical way for you to actually beat the game in some scenarios. Death is not only encouraged -  it is often necessary, both for you and the other players alike.

A plethora of level variations that make each game feel unique

The variety in levels is also great: you might start out your first game in a jungle, with a beautiful green forest backdrop. Then, before you know it, the scenery has changed; a new game has started and you are now seemingly in the pits of hell. Everything around you is on fire and pools of lava fill the bottom part of the screen. It is now time for a literal game of ‘the floor is lava’.

After either surviving or dying to that level you might be teleported to a desert or a freezing tundra. The changes in style makes the game feel even more engaging and makes each playthrough feel unique.

Use in-game prices to pay for character design changes

After grabbing enough gold coins during your runs, you have the option of coming to a bazaar every now and then, where you can trade in your well-earned coins for new clothing and hair options for your character.

It does not matter whether or not the characters are merely little blobs in pixelated form, having control over the cosmetic appearance of one’s character is always a great attribute to any game.

Feel like a god as you shape the world around your characters

With Tomb Rumbler, not only do you get a fun survival game, you also get a level editor so you can make your own levels for you and your friends to either conquer or lose in.

You can choose from a variety of different design themes. If you are a bit creatively inclined, you can create some truly outlandish deathtraps with the tools offered to you by the game developers.

Conclusion

Tomb Rumble is a great survival game with lots of action and fun ways to explore and level up your character.

Whether you are playing with friends, or making new ones online, the game’s multiplayer system seems to work without any quirks. The gameplay is in the forefront, thanks to the pixel art design. So if you like the nostalgic retro feel or if you are someone who does not need their games to look like the biggest AAA games out there, and if you enjoy competitive games, this will surely be one you won’t want to miss.
