How to use Recuva – step by step
1. Choose the file type you’re looking for

2. Specify where the files were deleted from
Next, choose where on your computer the files were deleted from. This could be the Recycle Bin, a specific folder, a USB drive, or the entire system. If you’re not sure, select “I’m not sure” — Recuva will then scan all available drives. The more precise you are, the faster the scan will be.
3. Turn Deep Scan on or skip it
You’ll now have the option to enable Deep Scan. This is especially useful if the files were deleted a long time ago, or if previous recovery attempts failed. Deep Scan takes longer than a normal scan but combs the drive more thoroughly and increases the chance of finding more — and more damaged — files.
4. Start the scan and wait for results
When you start the scan, Recuva shows a progress bar so you can track the process. Standard scans usually take a few minutes, while deep scans — especially on large hard drives — can take significantly longer. You can cancel at any time and review files already found.
5. Review the found files and check their status
When the scan is complete, you’ll see a list of files Recuva found. Each file has a status indicator (green, yellow, or red) that shows the likelihood of a successful recovery. Green means the file is in good condition, while red typically means it’s damaged or overwritten.
6. Recover the files you want with one click
Select the files you want to recover and click “Recover”. Then choose where to save them. It’s strongly recommended that you don’t save them to the same location they were deleted from — to avoid overwriting other deleted files you haven’t recovered yet.
Advanced use without the wizard:
If you prefer more control, you can disable the wizard and use the classic layout. This gives you detailed views, advanced filtering, and options to select specific file types, folders, and view modes. You can also use the “Preview” feature to see, for example, images before deciding to recover them.
