Runes of Magic is set in Taborea, where you help uncover the realm’s forgotten past. It’s easy to get started: choose one of six classes, complete a few beginner quests to learn the basics, and then head out on adventures—solo or with friends—in true WoW style. Runes of Magic isn’t just another game in the genre, though. After you reach level 10, you pick a secondary class that makes your character more unique and versatile. As you fight and complete quests, you earn points you can spend on new gear and character upgrades. Runes of Magic is free to play, but if you want to level faster or get the coolest weapons and house items, you can also buy them with a credit card. Visually, the game is nearly on par with WoW—sometimes even more impressive—and it matches the atmosphere and tone perfectly. If you’ve thought about trying this genre but didn’t want to risk paying for the wrong game, this is one of the best places to start. Even hardcore WoW players will find plenty to enjoy. On its own it’s a four-star experience, but it earns a fifth because it’s free to play. A must-try.
