Increase readability in your text with columns
Do you write newsletters, brochures or anything with a lot of text, maybe combined with images, it can increase both readability and layout to divide the text into columns. This instruction is taken from the 4D Consultants' textbook that is used on the 4D Consultants Microsoft Word courses. 
Note that what you can select in the Apply box is conditional on what you have selected in the document and if you divided the document into sections. Do you have for example marked a paragraph, you will be able to apply columns to selected text but not to the rest of the document.

Text in slots is another way to group and organize information in a document. The division of text into slots is, for example. useful when writing newsletters or brochures. In Word, you can define how many columns you want on the page. You can choose to let the text flow from the bottom of a column to the top of the next, or you can finish a text in a column so that subsequent text moves to the beginning of the next column.The Splits dialog box
Selecting Multiple Columns... displays the Splits dialog where you can define a variety of settings for columns.
