You play as Heimdall, a demigod from Norse mythology. Heimdall's duty is to guard the entrance to Asgard, home of the gods, against all evil, including the terrifying Ragnarok, when all the dark forces gather to try to destroy the gods and, ultimately, everything.
Unfortunately, Ragnarok is on the way, and to make matters worse Loki has hidden Thor's hammer, Odin's sword, and Frey's spear across three worlds. As the newly mortal Heimdall, you must visit each of these worlds to collect the gods' weapons.
The first world is Midgard (or Earth), the second is Utgard (the realm of giants), and the third is Asgard itself, the home of the gods. Each world has around 15 islands, and each island contains countless rooms.
When your mission begins, you get three mini-games to complete. How well you do in these determines Heimdall's statistics (strength, agility, etc.) as well as how many people he can choose to take with him in his small army.
The first side game is an axe-throwing contest. Here you must throw axes at a young barmaid and try to hit her pigtails. Unfortunately, Heimdall is slightly drunk, so the cursor is unsteady when you throw! The second game is Pig Catching (where you must chase and hopefully catch a pig in its pen), and the third game is Longboat Fight (where you must try to get to the other side of the longship without being thrown overboard).
Once you've done this, it's time to wander through an isometric landscape, solve puzzles, and slay evil until you finally find the gods' missing weapons.
