Notrium – The fight for survival on a hostile planet.
Notrium is a free survival game created by Ville Mönkkönen in 2003. You play as a lone survivor from a spaceship that has crash‑landed on the harsh planet Notrium. This isn’t about winning—it’s about surviving day by day in an unpredictable and deadly environment.
With a simple top‑down view and real‑time gameplay, Notrium delivers intense survival, exploration, and improvisation, where everything—from sunlight and shade to hunger, temperature, and resources—affects your chances of making it.
Survival at the core
You start with almost nothing—and you’ll quickly discover it’s a game where every step and every decision counts. There are no easy answers. You must:
- Collect food, water, and resources
- Avoid predators, robots, and aliens
- Build shelter, weapons, and campfires
- Handle heat by day and cold by night
- Learn from your mistakes—you will die (often)
There are multiple playable characters (Human, Android, Alien, etc.), each with unique abilities and limitations. This delivers high replay value and variety, with a playstyle that changes dramatically.
Open world with unpredictable dynamics
The world of Notrium is open and randomly generated in certain areas. That means every playthrough feels new. The game doesn’t constantly autosave, and mistakes can be costly—but that’s exactly what makes it feel like you’re truly fighting for your life.
Shifting weather and a day/night cycle add another layer of strategy: you must find warmth at night, avoid overheating during the day, and hide in the shadows. You’ll quickly learn that nature is just as dangerous as any enemy.
Crafting and improvisation
A core part of the game is its crafting system. You can:
- Combine found materials to make improvised weapons
- Build campfires, traps, shields, and medicine
- Create high‑tech gear if you survive long enough
This system is easy to learn but requires strategy and planning. You truly feel like an inventor when you fashion a laser rifle from scrap and batteries found in an alien camp.
Accessibility
The game is free and still runs well on modern systems. You can download it here and run it directly—often without installation. There are also fan remakes, mods, and graphical upgrades.
