🛡️ Pool of Radiance – The first major digital Dungeons & Dragons adventure.

Pool of Radiance was released in 1988 and is the first in SSI’s series of "Gold Box" RPGs, based on the classic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) ruleset. It was among the earliest games to faithfully bring the pen‑and‑paper experience to the PC, marking the start of one of the most beloved CRPG series ever.

The game is set in the Forgotten Realms, where you lead a party of adventurers who begin by helping liberate the city of Phlan, only to be drawn into a larger and far more epic quest—to seek the mysterious and magical Pool of Radiance.

⚔️ Tactical combat and old-school RPG magic

Gameplay in Pool of Radiance is split into two core elements:

  • First-person navigation and dialogue in towns and dungeons
  • Turn-based battles from a top-down perspective

You create your own party of characters—humans, elves, dwarves, and halflings—with classes like fighter, thief, cleric, and wizard. Combat demands:

  • Positioning
  • Smart use of spells and buffs
  • Coordination between party members

It’s classic D&D, where every decision in battle can mean the difference between victory and death—and it still feels satisfying and deep.

📜 A living world with meaningful choices

Phlan and its surroundings feel alive and reactive. You:

  • Take on quests from the city council
  • Explore ruins, sewers, and enemy strongholds
  • Encounter factions and foes like orcs, zombies, and wizards
  • Make moral choices and see consequences

The game offers a surprising degree of openness and freedom for its time, and you genuinely feel your decisions shape the city and the world around you.

🎨 Graphics and audio—retro with personality

The graphics are classic CGA/EGA with a limited color palette, but:

  • Characters are easy to recognize
  • Battlefields are tactically readable
  • Spell effects and attacks are simply animated yet effective

Audio is minimal, but it subtly supports the mood—and leaves room for your imagination, just like a pen-and-paper adventure.

💾 Availability

Today you can play the game via:

  • DOSBox
  • Re-releases and collections (e.g., the complete Gold Box series)
  • You can also find fan-enhanced versions and manuals online

Installation takes a bit of technical know-how, but it’s well worth the effort for old-school RPG fans.
