🏖️ Spellcasting 301: Spring Break – Magic, bikinis, and chaotic charm.
Spellcasting 301: Spring Break is the third and final chapter in Steve Meretzky’s classic adventure series about the ever-horny wizard apprentice Ernie Eaglebeak. While the first two games took place at Sorcerer University, the adventure now heads into the wild—specifically to Magic Beach, where the annual Spring Break is held.
Here it’s no longer about exams and curses, but about sun, contests, flirting, and unpredictable magic. Don’t be fooled by the laid-back surface—there are still plenty of puzzles, surprises, and ridiculous situations to tackle with both spellcasting and finesse.
🧙♂️ A magical Spring Break
In Spellcasting 301, Ernie must:
- Represent Sorcerer University in the annual Spring Break competition
- Battle rival schools and competing teams
- Earn points through tasks, performances, and flirting
- Navigate beach activities, parties, and bizarre enchantments
- ...and of course try to seduce a lineup of scantily clad characters along the way
It’s silly, sexy, and satirical—with clear inspiration from college comedies like Porky’s and American Pie.
🎮 Gameplay and structure
Spellcasting 301 follows the same text-and-graphics setup as the earlier games:
- You type commands (e.g., “talk to girl”, “cast spell on beer”, “go east”)
- The game shows an illustrated scene at the top
- You solve puzzles by experimenting with objects, dialog, and spells
The game is linear in its overall structure, but offers plenty of freedom to explore activities and contestants on the beach in your own order.
🏖️ Theme and tone – beach, fun, and satire
Steve Meretzky turns up the cheeky humor in this third entry, and it works surprisingly well. Yes, there are bikinis, pickup attempts, and risqué jokes, but it’s all delivered with charm and self-awareness. The erotic tone stays at playful innuendo rather than outright vulgarity, which keeps it fun and accessible.
🎨 Graphics and interface
Spellcasting 301 uses the same interface as its predecessors—with:
- Colorful 2D art
- A clear text window and parser
- Inventory and spell overview
The visuals fit the mood perfectly—caricatured and cartoony. It’s not technically impressive, but it has personality.
💾 Availability today
The game still works via:
- DOSBox (on both Windows, macOS and Linux)
- Retro packs and compilations (often together with the other two games)
- Fan sites with instructions and patching
It takes a bit of technical know-how, but it’s easy to get started for retro enthusiasts.
