Amulets and Armor

⚔️ Amulets and Armor – A classic dungeon crawler with old-school charm.

Love pixel art, monster-filled dungeons and treasure, and a story driven by your own choices? Then Amulets and Armor is for you. Originally released in 1997, it has since been re-released as free open source, which means it can now be played on modern systems with minimal tweaks.

The game combines a first-person perspective, a fantasy world, and RPG elements in one package, and feels a bit like an early version of Morrowind or Hexen, but with a stronger focus on stats and character progression.

🧙‍♂️ Gameplay and features

  • Choose from multiple classes and races with unique abilities
  • Explore dungeons, castles, and underground areas
  • Find and use amulets, weapons, armor, and spells
  • Battle a host of monsters—zombies, skeletons, demons, and more
  • Play solo or with others over LAN

The game offers 13 missions in a semi-open world where loot and tactics matter. Use magic, melee, or ranged weapons, with plenty of ways to tailor your playstyle.

🎮 Graphics and audio

Amulets and Armor uses a custom 2.5D engine reminiscent of DOOM, but with RPG systems layered on top. The visuals are retro yet readable and atmospheric. Musik and sound effects are simple, but work well to set the mood.

💾 Modern compatibility

The game was open-sourced and re-released on amuletsandarmor.com — here you’ll find downloads for Windows and instructions to run it with DOSBox or the improved Windows port.
