🧠 Beneath a Steel Sky – Cyberpunk, rebellion, and British satire in a dystopian future.

Beneath a Steel Sky is a point-and-click adventure game released in 1994 by Revolution Software — the studio behind the Broken Sword series. It’s one of the most acclaimed and memorable classics in the genre, and since 2003 it has been available completely free thanks to the ScummVM project and an official release.

You play as Robert Foster, an outsider torn from his home and dropped into a corrupt cyberpunk city where the upper class lives underground while the working class and oppressed live and toil in decaying high-rises up in the polluted sky. The story blends serious sci-fi, humor, and political satire — and it still holds up today.

🕹️ Classic point-and-click with intelligent storytelling

The game takes place in a bleak, futuristic metropolis called Union City, and you guide Foster in third person through beautifully illustrated backdrops. With help from your mechanical companion Joey, you will:

  • Hack systems and manipulate technology
  • Avoid surveillance and uncover the city’s dark secrets
  • Interact with eccentric citizens and their hidden motives
  • Solve puzzles and navigate complex conversations

The game balances a heavy atmosphere with sharp, British humor, making the experience both thought-provoking and entertaining.

🎨 Graphics, audio, and presentation

Beneath a Steel Sky uses hand-drawn backgrounds and characters, with art by Dave Gibbons (known from the Watchmen comics). The visual style oozes ’90s cyberpunk with industrial environments, neon lights, and worn-down machinery.

The audio is sparse but effective. The CD version includes voice acting, which adds character and atmosphere — and you can easily play it today via ScummVM.

🧠 A game with something to say

Behind the dark humor lies a serious critique of surveillance, class divides, and control. Beneath a Steel Sky is a game with something to say, and in many ways it was ahead of its time — both thematically and technically.
