Have you ever been in a situation where a friend sent you an image or a PDF with text you couldn’t extract from the file? Fortunately, the free OCR tool Capture2Text makes it easy by converting any area of your screen into editable text.

After you download Capture2Text, there’s nothing to install—just extract the folder and launch the app. Then right-click its icon in the system tray and open the settings to learn the available keyboard shortcuts. To select an area on your screen, press Windows key + Q. The result can be pasted into your current window, copied to the clipboard, or displayed in a pop-up window.

In our tests, each time we captured an area on the screen, Capture2Text recognized almost all characters without issues. The program also includes a speech recognition feature, but we didn’t focus on it in our review.
