Chart Geany 6.3.3

We are by no means experts in stocks or finance, but of course you can also find programs and tools in this category here on our website. For example, you can learn more about Chart Geany right here — it is 100% free and open source. With this tool, you can fetch stock data and study price charts to understand how they have changed along with the market. You can also use Chart Geany to manage your own holdings with its portfolio feature.

We ran a quick test of Chart Geany on a PC with Windows 11 installed, and on this page you can read how the program works based on our experience with it. As mentioned, we are by no means experts in this field, but it still wasn’t difficult to get the software up and running.

Installing Chart Geany

To use Chart Geany, you of course need to install it first. The program is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, so it works on most computers. To get the installer for your platform, simply click the download button on this page; you will be taken to the tool’s SourceForge page where all installers are available.

When we tested the Windows edition of Chart Geany, the installation process was similar to most other programs. Just download the EXE file and double-click it to start the setup.

You can choose where to install Chart Geany, and if you want a desktop shortcut, you can enable that during setup. Alternatively, you can find the program in the Start menu and create a desktop shortcut later if you prefer.

How to use Chart Geany

When you open Chart Geany, you are greeted by the main window where you can access its different features. It’s largely up to the user to figure things out, as there’s no built-in guide or manual. It does look like there was meant to be one: clicking the info icon reveals a button for the program manual, but it didn’t work for us.

We did find that Chart Geany has a small YouTube channel that shows how to use several features. You can visit the YouTube channel by clicking right here.

To be fair, if you have basic knowledge of stocks, Chart Geany isn’t very hard to use. For brand-new users, however, an introductory guide inside the program would have been helpful.

Creating stock charts

If you want to create a chart for a specific stock, start by clicking the "Data Manager" button in the upper-left corner of the program window. Here you can import XLS and CSV files, but the easiest way is to click "Download Data" and pull the information from the internet.

As shown in the GIF below, you can choose Yahoo from the drop-down menu and download data for Microsoft by typing "MSFT" in the symbol field. When the download is complete, just double-click the stock to display its chart.

You can adjust and customize the chart in several ways. At the top, choose whether to view price action by day, week, month, or year. Click the settings button to pick among Line Chart, Candle Chart, Heikin-Ashi, or Bar Chart. You can also tweak colors to your liking, and the drawing tools let you add your own annotations.

If you want to save an image of a specific chart, that’s easy—Chart Geany includes a built-in screenshot feature. Screenshots are saved as PNG files.

Creating a personal stock portfolio

Chart Geany also includes a portfolio feature you can use to manage your different stocks and investments. You’ll find it by clicking "Portfolio Manager" at the top of the program.

You can create your own portfolio quickly, and it seems you can add as many as you like. On our PC there was already a sample portfolio set up, as illustrated in the following GIF.

With the portfolio you can monitor your finances and the stocks you want to track. At the bottom of the program you can see whether you are up or down overall. To add new entries to the portfolio, click "Show Transactions" and then press the plus button.

Our verdict on the program

Since we’re not experts in stock software, we’ll leave the final verdict on Chart Geany to our users. From our own impressions, we consider it a big plus that the program is open source and available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It’s also easy to create charts and save screenshots of them.

As for drawbacks, the interface could use a major facelift—it looks rather old-fashioned. It’s also a downside that the program doesn’t ship with a guide or manual, even if there is a YouTube channel we linked above.

All in all, remember that Chart Geany is completely free. You shouldn’t expect too much, and if it’s not to your taste, you can always uninstall it again. If you decide to try it, we hope you enjoy it!
