Create and organize family trees with Gramps for Mac, which is open-source and free. You can also download a version for Windows here.
Do you keep track of every member of your family? People have been building family trees for hundreds of years to organize relatives in a simple, clear way. Gramps, available for Windows and Mac, is a free piece of software that lets you do this on your computer.
In our test, we installed Gramps on a MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks. The interface turned out to be quite confusing, and overall the app just doesn’t feel like it was designed for Apple’s platform. Since it’s open-source and cross-platform, we could accept that if Gramps were actually easy to use—but that’s not the case either, so if you want to get started, you’ll likely need to look through this online manual.
Gramps is also developed for Linux and older versions of Mac OS X. If you’re looking for one of those versions, take a look at the developer’s website, which you can find here.
