Create and organize family trees with Gramps for Windows, which is free and open-source. You can also download a version for Mac here.

Do you have a handle on every member of your family? People have been building family trees for centuries to keep relatives organized in a simple, easy-to-read way. Gramps, available for Windows and Mac, is free genealogy software that lets you do this on your computer.

In our test, we installed Gramps on a MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks. The interface was quite confusing, and overall it doesn’t feel like an app built for Apple’s platform. Since it’s open-source and cross-platform, we could live with that if Gramps were easy to use—but it isn’t, so to get started you will likely need to consult this online manual.

Gramps is also developed for Linux and older versions of Mac OS X. If you are looking for one of those builds, check the developer’s website here.
