The Bard’s Tale 1 – Tales of the Unknown

The Bard’s Tale – Classic dungeon crawler in a cursed city.

The Bard’s Tale is one of the most iconic old-school RPGs of the 1980s, and it all begins in the dark, frozen city of Skara Brae. The evil wizard Mangar the Dark has plunged the city into eternal winter and unleashed hordes of monsters into the streets. Now it’s up to you and your party to venture into sewers, dungeons, and labyrinthine alleys to find a way to defeat him.

The game blends classic first-person dungeon crawling, turn-based combat, and character progression with a strong narrative and plenty of challenge. You begin by assembling a party of adventurers—including warriors, wizards, priests, and of course a bard—who plays a special role with magical songs that can both empower the party and harm enemies.

You’ll gradually gain access to stronger magic, better gear, and vital information as you explore the city’s many levels and battle everything from skeletons to demons. Even though the game is retro on all fronts today—graphics, sound, and interface—the atmosphere, mysteries, and tactical depth remain captivating.

The Bard’s Tale was groundbreaking for its time and still stands as a milestone in RPG history.
