Call of Duty 2 – One of the best WWII shooters ever

Call of Duty 2 is a classic first-person shooter from 2005 that truly put the series on the global map. The game takes you back to World War II to fight across iconic battlefields like Stalingrad, El Alamein, and the beaches of Normandy.

We tested Call of Duty 2 on a modern Windows 11 PC, and while the graphics have naturally aged, it still plays surprisingly well. The fast-paced action, atmospheric audio, and historical authenticity still manage to give you chills.

Gameplay and features

The gameplay is simple yet extremely effective. Weapons feel authentic, and the way missions are structured makes you feel like part of a larger war effort. You play as Soviet, British, and American soldiers, providing multiple perspectives on the conflict.

The multiplayer mode was especially popular in Denmark, with many playing it at LAN parties in the mid-2000s. Classic modes like Search & Destroy and Team Deathmatch delivered countless hours of intense competition.

Graphics and audio

For its time, Call of Duty 2 was nothing short of groundbreaking. Smoke, explosions, and snow-covered battlefields created a gripping atmosphere. The soundtrack and voice acting still stand out — they elevate the game’s realism and intensity.

Challenges and controls

Controls are straightforward and very similar to modern FPS games. We had no issues running the game on a newer PC, though it did require a bit of setup via compatibility mode. That can be a hurdle for players unfamiliar with older titles.

Strengths and weaknesses

Call of Duty 2 shines with its storytelling, intensity, and classic multiplayer. Its biggest drawback is that the graphics and AI can’t match today’s standards. Even so, nostalgia and simple, effective gameplay make it a gem that’s still worth playing.

Top 5 tips for Call of Duty 2

Use smoke grenades tactically

In Call of Duty 2, smoke grenades are especially effective for covering yourself in open areas like El Alamein. They buy you time to advance without getting cut down.

Move in short bursts

If you sprint out in the open, you’ll be dropped quickly. Use cover and move in small bursts — it’s a strategy that often saves your life.

Swap weapons often

Use different weapons depending on the map. Rifles offer precision at range, while SMGs and machine guns are ideal in close-quarters fights.

Play the campaign first

The campaign teaches weapons, tactics, and mechanics. It makes you much better prepared for multiplayer matches afterward.

Play via LAN or private servers

Even though the official servers are gone, you can still play with friends via LAN or fan-run private servers — a truly nostalgic experience.
