Far Cry – the classic that set the standard for open-world action

Far Cry quickly became one of the most groundbreaking first-person shooters when it launched, and we tested it on a modern Windows 11 PC to see how it holds up today. The game delivers an impressive visual experience (for its time), with vast tropical islands, crystal-clear water, and dense jungles setting the stage for intense, strategic combat.

Gameplay and features

As Jack Carver, you’re dropped into a tropical archipelago where enemies lurk everywhere. The game set itself apart by giving you freedom: sneak through the jungle or engage in open firefights. The arsenal ranges from pistols to heavy machine guns, and with its open structure, no mission feels exactly the same.

We found that enemies respond dynamically to your movements — if you sneak, they can lose you in the terrain, while a careless shot attracts more enemies. This creates a tense atmosphere where strategy is just as important as precision.

Graphics and design

The graphics are still a pleasure when you consider the game is from 2004. In testing, we were especially impressed by the long draw distance — enemies and structures can be spotted from far away, which opens up realistic planning for assaults.

The environments feel alive with dense vegetation, realistic shadows, and beautiful water reflections. On modern hardware, the game runs smoothly, but don’t expect the same level of polish you get in newer Far Cry entries.

Challenges and controls

Controls feel tight and responsive, but the difficulty skews high. Enemies are accurate shots, and you’ll need tactical thinking to survive. In our tests, some missions required multiple attempts because enemies often work in groups and use the terrain to their advantage.

Strengths and weaknesses

Far Cry is still worth playing, especially if you want to experience where the series started. It offers a unique blend of open-world freedom, strategy, and intense action, though its age shows in a few stiff animations and a somewhat old-school mission structure.
