Virtua Cop 2 is the sequel to SEGA’s classic arcade shooter and is widely regarded as the best entry in the series. The game builds on the familiar on-rails gameplay from the first Virtua Cop, but with more stages, new enemy types, and far more mission variety.
While the first game served as a technical showcase for 3D action in the arcades, Virtua Cop 2 feels like a more complete release. The pace is faster, the stages are longer, and the difficulty is dialed up a notch.
We tested Virtua Cop 2 on a modern Windows 11 PC, and even without a light gun it still delivers the intense arcade feel that made the series popular in the ’90s.
Gameplay and features
The gameplay is classic rail shooter. You move automatically through each stage as an elite officer and must eliminate armed criminals before they can shoot you. At the same time, watch out for hostages, who often appear in the middle of the chaos.
Virtua Cop 2 introduces multiple alternate routes within stages depending on which enemies you shoot and how quickly you react. That gives the game surprisingly high replay value for an arcade title of this type.
Playable solo or in two-player co-op, which is still some of the most fun when you’re sitting side by side.
Graphics and sound
The graphics are still angular, polygonal 3D, but markedly improved compared to the first game. Enemies have more detailed animations, environments are larger, and there are many more interactive elements.
The audio is pure SEGA arcade: dramatic voice samples, punchy gunshots, and frantic background music. It all supports the pace perfectly—even if it feels a bit kitschy today.
Difficulty and replay value
Virtua Cop 2 is harder than the original, especially in the later stages. Enemies fire faster and give you less time to react. In return, it’s even more satisfying to clear a stage without losing a life.
The game isn’t long, but it’s built to be replayed. High scores, tighter accuracy, and alternate routes keep you coming back.
