Gothic 3 – open-world fantasy, orcs, and freedom in Myrtana

Gothic 3 is an open-world fantasy RPG that returns you to Myrtana after the orcs have won the war and seized control of much of the land. Humans live under pressure, rebels hide in the forests, and you’re caught in a brutal power struggle where your choices decide whether you support the king, the orcs, or follow your own path.

This isn’t a modern, hand-holding RPG. Gothic 3 is messy, ambitious, uneven, and at times quite punishing—but also deeply atmospheric if you enjoy free exploration, factions, and a world where you must decide who truly deserves your loyalty.

During our test on a Windows 11 PC, the freedom, music, and expansive world still made a strong impression. You can also clearly feel that Gothic 3 is an older game with a history of technical issues. The latest version makes it far more playable, but it still requires a bit of patience.

A vast open world with real freedom

Gothic 3 offers a large open world with forests, mountain paths, and dangerous regions—letting you choose your own route through Myrtana.

Gothic 3 takes place in an open world where you can roam freely between cities, forests, ruins, deserts, and frozen regions. It feels more open than previous Gothic games, giving you the sense of being unleashed in a world already coming apart.

You’re not constantly funneled down a single obvious path. Instead, you encounter orc-occupied towns, rebels trying to regroup, mercenaries, traders, mages, and countless local disputes. It makes Gothic 3 compelling because the world rarely feels like it exists solely for the player’s sake.

Orcs, rebels, and hard choices

The heart of Gothic 3 isn’t just monster-slaying—it’s Myrtana’s shifting power balance. The orcs control many cities, and humans are cowed, collaborating, or on the run. You can choose to help the rebels, work with the orcs, or try to navigate between factions without pledging yourself too quickly.

That gives the game a different tone than many classic fantasy titles. It’s not only about being the sword-wielding hero. Some choices are pragmatic, others are brutal, and you’ll often question whether it’s wise to spark a conflict too early.

Combat and character progression

The combat system in Gothic 3 is easier to approach than in the earlier games, but it’s also one of the most divisive parts. Melee can quickly feel a bit clumsy, especially when several enemies attack at once. Bows, magic, and better gear help, but Gothic 3 still rewards players who think before charging into a hostile camp.

Character progression, on the other hand, works well. You earn experience, improve your abilities, and can specialize in weapons, hunting, magic, thievery, alchemy, and other skills. It provides a strong sense of steady growth—especially early on, when even common animals and bandits can feel dangerous.

Gothic 3 on a modern PC

Gothic 3 is known as one of the most ambitious yet uneven RPGs of its time—and you can still feel it. Animations, UI, and combat are dated, and you shouldn’t expect the same polish as newer open-world RPGs.

That said, it’s a much more interesting game to revisit today than it was at launch. The improved version and later fixes let you focus on what Gothic 3 truly excels at: atmosphere, music, freedom, and the feeling of traveling through a war‑torn land where every town simmers with its own tension.

For players who miss RPGs with an edge

Gothic 3 isn’t the best choice if you want a streamlined, fast, modern RPG. It is, however, a great pick if you miss PC RPGs with bite, factions, free exploration, and a world that doesn’t always explain itself.

It’s still a game with flaws and rough edges, but also one with real soul. That combination makes Gothic 3 worth keeping on Holyfile. It’s not perfect, but it’s hard to forget.

Top 5 tips for Gothic 3

In Gothic 3 you can quickly get locked into conflicts between orcs, rebels, and other factions. Talk to people in towns, take small jobs first, and learn the balance of power before you start liberating areas or attacking key characters.

Gothic 3 is big, open, and sometimes unforgiving. A bad fight, a poor choice, or an unlucky situation can cost a lot of time. Keep multiple saves so you can always revert without losing your progress.

It’s tempting to jump straight into the war against the orcs, but Gothic 3 punishes overconfidence. Build your character, get better gear, and gauge enemy strength before starting major battles. Some fights are better saved for later.

Weapons, plants, hides, food, and trinkets can quickly turn into money or useful resources. Early on, gear and training are expensive, so loot thoroughly and sell what you don’t use.

Gothic 3 is known for being ambitious but technically uneven. If you’re on a modern PC, make sure the game is updated through your platform of choice. You’ll usually get a more stable experience with fewer annoying issues.
