Think back to 2006 and 2007. A lot has happened since then. Britney Spears ruled the charts, smartphones were just taking off, and many of us were kids or young teens. Games like World of Warcraft were at their peak—and so was Runescape.

But the game has changed a lot since then, and the loyal original player base generally hasn’t been very happy about it. That’s why Old School Runescape, as we knew it in 2007, is back.

Dive into a vast and captivating world

Runescape takes place in the mysterious fantasy world of Gielinor. It’s packed with countless adventures to embark on. You make your own fun.

Adventures come in the form of quests you complete as you grow stronger. There are plenty you can do without a membership, and even more if you subscribe.

They range from helping a farmer shear his sheep to stopping a mysterious cult from summoning a powerful demon, and more.

Many of these missions require specific abilities and levels. These are the game’s skills—23 in total, with 8 reserved for “members.”

You can train woodcutting, runecrafting, combat skills, and more. The max level is 99; reach it and you’ll earn a slick skillcape that shows everyone what you’re great at—a badge of honor, if you will.

Bring your friends along for the adventure

Runescape is a massive world—and it’s multiplayer. Hundreds of thousands of players worldwide explore and battle for loot, reputation, and everything else you can imagine.

If you want to fight other players, head to The Wilderness. There you can slay powerful monsters for incredible rewards—but watch out for other players. PvP is enabled, and if you die you’ll lose many of your items for others to pick up and sell.

That makes ambushing unsuspecting players pretty profitable—and, admittedly, a bit fun.

The game offers many servers across regions like the United States, United Kingdom, and more. If you want to meet players from your area, connect to US servers.

A charming old-school look

Old School Runescape is the version from 2007. That was a while ago, and graphics back then weren’t what they are today.

Compared to modern Runescape, it can’t compete on visuals—or can it? Old School Runescape has one big advantage: nostalgia.

Many of us have a mental picture of how the game should look, and this is it. When we boot up Old School Runescape, we see the game that hooked us years ago—something no newer version can replicate.

Old School Runescape is a bit clunky, design‑wise, however. Much of the interface is split into different windows you sort through, as in classic RPGs. Here you access your quest list, inventory, a music player for in‑game tracks, and more.

To interact with the world you right‑click objects to bring up a dropdown menu showing your options. Expect lots of mouse clicking.

Conclusion

Old School Runescape is easy to recommend if you want a solid game with a heavy dose of nostalgia. It’s a relic from a time when games focused more on gameplay than graphics. If that appeals to you, you should definitely dive in.
