Resident Evil 8 launched in 2021 and follows the other Resident Evil games in their survival-horror style. This new story continues from the previous game (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard), which ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. The new game focuses on Ethan Winters and his wife, Mia, who are trying to make their new life together work. Both characters also appeared in the previous game.
Familiar faces also return, for better and worse—for example, Chris Redfield, the legendary hero from many earlier games, features in Resident Evil 8.

Part of a legacy of intense horror games
The critically acclaimed Resident Evil is an expanded universe that currently consists of 21 titles since the first game’s release in 1996. In addition to the games, a whole series of films has been released over the past few decades, helping define the modern horror film genre.
The series is recognized as one of the reasons the fascination with zombies exploded in the 2000s.
One reason mirrored a broader trend to legitimize everything through science. For one of the first times in modern pop culture, the supernatural phenomenon of the “zombie” or “living dead” was given a scientific explanation—both as an infectious agent that can be transmitted to others and as a bio-organism reminiscent of bacteria and parasitic life forms known from nature.

Terrifyingly good gameplay—but a weapon system that isn’t exactly innovative
If you download the demo, don’t expect the most over-the-top gameplay. You’ll be able to walk/run around two locations—the village and the castle, which is owned by one of the grotesque monsters you’ll fight and flee from in the full game.
The story in this version of Resident Evil is strong, especially if you enjoy exploring and don’t feel the need to rush through a new game. Small details and clues are scattered around for you to pick up if you spend extra time in each area.
The weapon system isn’t the best in the world (but it isn’t bad, either). You have a range of weapons to use, each with varying usefulness depending on the enemy you’re up against.
Never get tired of the game—install free PC mods that change how you play
Even though the eighth main entry in the Resident Evil series has never looked better and offers more variety in locations and monsters than ever, it’s still possible to run out of steam facing the same scare scenarios over and over.
That’s why many players expand their experience with mods that can make the game feel fresh or look completely different.

For example, quite a few mods focus on swapping Lady Dimitrescu’s and Heisenberg’s outfits for something fans consider more fitting—or more outrageous—depending on the mood.
You can also download mods that give you access to more weapons than the base game. In short, you get freer rein to do exactly what you want and shape the experience to your liking.
Play on multiple systems
Resident Evil: Village can be played on most devices, letting you choose your preferred platform. If you want to play on Playstation you can of course buy the full game, but there’s also a demo. Just note it isn’t the same demo as on PC. On the plus side, if you have both systems you can try both demos before deciding whether the game is for you.
Xbox series X/S og Xbox One can also run Resident Evil 8. This platform also has a demo version, which you can download her.

Conclusion
The Resident Evil series helped shape the zombie genre from the 2000s onward, and this game proves the franchise hasn’t lost its grip on horror fans.
For many, Resident Evil 7 and 8 are the favorites once the nostalgia glasses come off—and it’s easy to see why. The story is engaging, the monsters are spectacular, and you’ll experience plenty of moments where you’re unsure what’s really happening or how things connect. The good news: by the end, you’ll get answers to nearly all your questions—if not earlier in the game.
Even though the weapon and combat systems haven’t been refined much and feel similar to many other titles on the market, it doesn’t detract from the overall experience.
