ScreenToGif – Capture and edit screen videos on Windows with ease.
ScreenToGif is a free, user-friendly Windows app that lets you record your screen — and edit instantly. You can save your recordings as GIF, MP4, or other formats, and the software is even available in Danish. It’s one of the tools we at Download.dk use frequently.

Recording and editing in one solution
When you launch ScreenToGif, you’ll see four simple buttons: Recorder, Webcam, Board, and Editor. From here, choose the feature you need. For screen recording, simply drag a frame around the area you want to capture. You can start and stop with a single click.
When the recording is finished, the video opens in the built-in video editor, which is one of ScreenToGif’s biggest strengths. Here you can:
- Add or remove frames
- Apply watermarks (e.g., your logo)
- Add text, shapes, and transitions
- Crop and adjust speed
- Export to GIF, MP4, AVI, APNG, and more

Ease of use and Danish interface
The software is translated into Danish, making it very accessible — even for less technical users. It’s ideal for school assignments, tutorials, software demos, and social media. Everything is intuitive, and it requires no prior experience.
Portable version for USB use
ScreenToGif is also available as a portable edition that requires no installation. You can keep it on a USB drive and run it directly on another computer — for example, at work or in school environments. This makes it extremely flexible and easy to use wherever you are.

Comparison: Sniptool as a complement
If you’re looking for a program to take screenshots, we also recommend Sniptool. It supports text, arrows, and annotations — but it lacks the built-in video editor that ScreenToGif offers. The two tools complement each other well, and we recommend installing both.
Top 5 tips for ScreenToGif (extended)
1. Use the capture frame — focus only on what’s necessary
When you start a recording, an adjustable frame appears to define what’s captured. Position and scale it precisely to avoid recording too much of the screen, which increases file size and makes editing more time-consuming.
🔧 Tip: Use hotkeys (Ctrl + mouse) to quickly resize the frame. Center it around the relevant area, such as an app window, a chart, or an animation.
2. Add your logo as a watermark — protect your content
ScreenToGif includes a built-in watermark tool so you can brand your videos and GIFs. Use a logo, URL, or name — perfect when sharing online to discourage uncredited use.
🔧 Tip: Use the Transparency and Placement options to keep your watermark visible but unobtrusive. You can also animate the watermark for extra attention.
3. Leverage the “Board” feature — create quick visual explanations
The Board gives you a blank canvas where you can draw freely while ScreenToGif records everything. It’s ideal for short explainers, education, or brainstorming when you want to visualize ideas fast.
🔧 Tip: Use different colors and line thicknesses to make drawings easier to follow — and export Board recordings as GIFs for easy sharing in emails or chat.
4. Trim and adjust frame by frame — precise editing
ScreenToGif’s editor lets you cut, delete, and tweak individual frames. This is especially useful for removing dead time at the beginning or end, or when adding text and effects on selected frames.
🔧 Tip: Use the editor’s zoom to get a full overview, and enable Preview mode to see how changes affect the animation.
5. Save as MP4 for higher quality and smaller file size
Although ScreenToGif excels at GIFs, MP4 is better for longer, more detailed recordings. MP4 preserves image quality and results in much smaller files — perfect for social media, YouTube, or email.
🔧 Tip: In the Encoder settings, choose H.264 and adjust the bitrate as needed. For web projects, MP4 offers greater flexibility and browser compatibility.
