The game falls into the “adventure / story / puzzle game” category, meaning you solve small tasks and puzzles in strategic ways to uncover more of the world around you.

The publisher – Hello Games – a small studio with big ambitions

Hello Games is an independent UK development studio with offices in Guildford and Cambridge. The idea behind the studio is a small team of passionate people doing their utmost to create the most polished product possible—and they’ve managed that with The Last Campfire.

They have gone from working in a small apartment with a hole in the roof to developing games worth millions, including one of the best-selling new IPs in the gaming world: No Man’s Sky

The Last Campfire was also nominated for Best British Game by BAFTA and for Indie Game of the Year at the SXSW Awards in 2021. The game launched in mid-2020, yet it continued to receive glowing reviews and nominations in 2021, which says a lot about its high quality.

Although it released in 2020, it only recently arrived on Steam (October 7, 2021), celebrated with a free demo.

A sensitive, helpful soul

You play as the small figure Ember, who wakes up in a world all alone after becoming separated from a group of similar beings. It is now up to Ember to make their way through the darkness, solve various riddles and puzzles, find the fire, and help lost spirits move on.

Even though Ember is just a little blob in a blue cloak that covers everything but a small part of their face, this tiny character still stirs your emotions. The game is an introspective journey that confronts themes such as loneliness, empathy, compassion, life, and death.

On Ember’s journey, you will encounter many different characters, ranging from ghost-like spirits to plump pigs, massive frogs, and various wild animals in nature (and much more).

Musical accompaniment that tugs at the heartstrings

It’s not just the adorable character Ember and the engaging story that stand out—the soundtrack does too.

The Last Campfire is in many ways similar to another recent release, Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Both games are about helping lost souls (each with its own approach), with music that draws you in and sets the tone for the entire experience. They also share cute yet beautiful visuals that together elevate the games into a true experience.

Where the music in Kena largely focused on mysterious instruments that sounded unlike anything you’d heard before, the instruments in The Last Campfire feel more classical and familiar. Various techniques mimic real-world sounds, such as nature, in the percussion, winds, and melodic piano lines that often follow a rhythm that feels like walking or running.

The music is composed by Paul Weir, who also worked on the soundtrack to Hello Games’ other hit: No Man’s Sky.

Solve puzzles with items from your inventory

As you move through this mysterious world, you will come across various objects that you can pick up and carry—just place them in your inventory. You can then use them to solve riddles and puzzles that let you progress through the story.

For example, you begin by finding the bag that becomes your inventory, taken from a deceased ember—and inside is a small bronze figurine that you can use a little later to overcome a minor maze-like obstacle.

Puzzles are solved through experimentation and come in two main forms:

One type lives in the open world, where you move between different parts of the map to solve small puzzles that ultimately connect and open new passages to explore.

The other type is a dream-like sequence, where the world suddenly changes into a dedicated puzzle arena and you must complete specific challenges to move the story forward.

Conclusion

The Last Campfire is a touching game with satisfying gameplay if you enjoy puzzle mechanics in the vein of the Zelda series and click-and-move titles, with limited—yet still rewarding—exploration.

The music is the icing on the cake and will undoubtedly move you if the adorable little Ember doesn’t manage that on their own.

It’s not the longest game in the world, but you will still feel like you spent meaningful time with Ember when it’s over, in part because of the game’s lack of combat, which gives it a calmer, more relaxed feel.
