Command & Conquer Generals – classic real-time strategy with modern appeal
Command & Conquer Generals is a classic real-time strategy game where you step into the role of a general and lead massive military forces across modern warzones around the world. The game marked a clear shift for the Command & Conquer series as it left its sci-fi roots behind to focus on contemporary, geopolitically inspired warfare—something that still makes it stand out today.
We tested the game on a Windows 11 PC using compatibility mode, and while it takes a bit of setup on modern systems, the gameplay still runs surprisingly smoothly. Especially for fans of classic RTS like Red Alert and Age of Empires, Generals really strikes a chord.
Gameplay and strategic depth

In Command & Conquer Generals, you choose between three very different factions: USA, China, and the GLA. Each faction has its own playstyle, unique units, and strategic strengths. The USA focuses on advanced technology and precision strikes, China leans on raw military might, while the GLA uses guerrilla tactics, inexpensive units, and crafty traps.
You have access to more than 150 units and structures, and the game consistently rewards tactical thinking. It’s not enough to mass-produce troops—timing, positioning, and resource management are critical.
Campaign and missions
The single-player component features more than 35 missions set in global hotspots inspired by real-world conflicts. The missions vary nicely in pace and objectives, and several will force you to rethink your strategy on the fly.
The story is told primarily through briefing sequences and gameplay, and while the narrative isn’t deep, it works effectively as a framework for the campaign.
Graphics, audio, and atmosphere

Visually, Command & Conquer Generals naturally shows its age, but readability remains excellent. Units are easy to tell apart, and battlefields are clear—something many modern RTS games actually struggle with.
Audio is a highlight. The voice acting—especially from the GLA faction—has become cult among fans, and the music perfectly supports the militaristic vibe.
Multiplayer and replay value
The game has huge replay value, thanks especially to multiplayer and an active modding scene. Mods like ShockWave and Rise of the Reds have kept it alive for many years and still make it relevant in 2026.
Top 5 tips for Command & Conquer Generals
1. Learn each faction’s weaknesses
Knowing your opponent’s faction is just as important as mastering your own. The GLA is strong early but weaker in the late game.
2. Prioritize resources from the start
Economy almost always decides the outcome. Protect your supply lines and disrupt the enemy’s.
3. Use general abilities actively
Your special abilities can turn a losing battle—especially precision strikes and support powers.
4. Scout constantly
Information is power. Use cheap units or drones to track enemy movements.
5. Consider mods for a better experience
Community mods can improve balance, visuals, and add new units—highly recommended.
