GTA 3 – The game that started the modern open-world revolution
Grand Theft Auto III – better known as GTA 3 – changed video games forever when it launched in 2001. While the earlier games in the series were in 2D, GTA 3 introduced, for the first time, a fully three-dimensional, living city that players could freely explore.
By today’s standards it seems simple, but back then it was groundbreaking. GTA 3 became a cultural milestone and a turning point for both Rockstar Games and the entire games industry. Today it still stands as a classic worth experiencing—both for nostalgia and to understand the genre’s roots.
A grim story of revenge and survival
You play as Claude, a silent antihero who is betrayed by his girlfriend during a heist and left for dead. After a dramatic prison escape, he ends up in Liberty City, a grim and corrupt metropolis inspired by New York, where he slowly works his way up through the criminal underworld.
In Grand Theft Auto III you take on jobs from mobsters, Triads, corrupt politicians, and drug lords. The story is told through cutscenes, radio shows, and character dialogue—and even though Claude never says a word, the game builds an intense atmosphere that keeps it gripping.
Gameplay and mission types
GTA 3 offers classic sandbox gameplay that still holds up:
- Over 50 missions ranging from street races, assassinations, and sabotage to classic "delivery" jobs
- Free exploration of three districts: Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale
- Vehicles such as taxis, sports cars, trucks, boats, and tanks
- Access to weapons like the Uzi, shotgun, rocket launcher, and Molotovs
- A dynamic wanted-level system where the police escalate their response as your crimes mount
There’s no autosave, so you need to save manually at safe houses. It makes the game more intense—and more punishing.
Graphics and audio – then and now
At launch, GTA 3 was graphically impressive, and its dark, rain-soaked Liberty City created a fantastic atmosphere. Today the graphics are of course dated, but with mods or remastered versions (as in GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition) you can experience the game with updated visual effects.
The audio is still iconic. Cars have their own radio stations with everything from techno and reggae to satire and talk radio—and it remains one of the game’s most charming features.

Save often—especially after missions—and use different safe houses as checkpoints across the city.
