GTA: San Andreas – The biggest revolution in the Grand Theft Auto series
GTA: San Andreas, released in 2004, was a giant leap forward for Rockstar and open-world games in general. Where GTA III and Vice City laid the foundation, San Andreas built an empire: three cities, a deeper story, RPG elements, customization, working out, eating, gang wars, and more. It wasn’t just a game—it became a cultural milestone and is considered by many the best classic GTA experience to date.
Top-tier story and character development
You play as Carl "CJ" Johnson, who returns to Los Santos after his mother’s death. He finds a fractured neighborhood, gang warfare, and corruption. The story draws heavily on 90s hip-hop culture, gangsta rap, and films like Boyz n the Hood—making it feel alive and authentic.
The plot ranges widely—from small gang skirmishes to statewide missions, infiltrating military bases, and political power plays.
Three cities, one massive map
The game takes place in San Andreas, a fictional state inspired by California and Nevada. Here you’ll find:
- Los Santos (based on Los Angeles)
- San Fierro (based on San Francisco)
- Las Venturas (based on Las Vegas)
Each city has its own style, population, and culture—and between them lie open countryside, deserts, mountain ranges, and airports. The map still feels impressively large today.
RPG elements and freedom
San Andreas introduced stats for CJ: you can make him stronger, slimmer, bulkier, better at driving or flying—depending on what you do in the game. You can:
- Work out at gyms
- Eat at fast-food restaurants
- Buy and change clothes
- Learn new fighting techniques
- Get tattoos and new hairstyles for CJ
That level of character customization and freedom was almost unheard of in 2004—and it still makes the game fun to return to.
Missions and vehicles
The missions are extremely varied: street races, flight training, sabotage, heists, escorts, stealth, train robberies, and much more. You can use everything from BMX bikes and sports cars to jet planes, tanks, and motorcycles. And of course, the iconic Lowrider battles.
Music and atmosphere
Like Vice City, San Andreas features a superb soundtrack, with everything from 2Pac and N.W.A. to country, disco, and soul. The radio stations are packed with both music and satire, and they’re a key part of the game’s identity.
Modern availability
San Andreas has been released in many versions:
- The original PC version runs fine with patches on Windows 10/11
- Definitive Edition (2021) is available for newer consoles and PC with improved graphics (but also some technical issues)
- The mobile versions are optimized for Android and iOS
- Also available via Rockstar Launcher and Steam

🕵️♂️ Top 5 Easter eggs in GTA: San Andreas
1. Bigfoot and the Area 69 myth
Rumors about Bigfoot in the forests are legendary. Although he never officially existed in the game, many players have “seen” something in the fog. In addition, Area 69 (a military base in the desert) is packed with aliens, hidden aircraft, and mysterious documents.
2. “There are no Easter Eggs up here. Go away.”
At the top of the Gant Bridge, if you fly or climb up there, you’ll find a small humorous message from the developers. A classic Rockstar moment.
3. CJ’s ghost mother’s house
In Los Santos, near CJ’s childhood home, there’s a house where—in certain versions of the game—you can spot “shadow ghosts” in the windows. It’s never been confirmed whether it’s a bug, a deliberate Easter egg, or just superstition.
4. Mysterious rock formation in Flint County
A rock face clearly resembles a human face—many believe it’s an homage to Mount Rushmore or even the developers themselves.
5. Haunted shacks and hidden graveyards
Scattered around the deserts and forests you’ll find abandoned shacks and graveyards with no map markers—some with audio and ambience hinting at something supernatural.
