PDF-XChange Viewer – fast, advanced PDF reader with annotation tools.

For many years, PDF-XChange Viewer was the preferred free alternative to Adobe Reader — and although it’s no longer actively developed (it’s been replaced by PDF-XChange Editor), it’s still lightweight, blazing fast, and highly practical. It serves as a PDF reader with powerful annotation features and is ideal for users who handle lots of documents in Windows environments.

Features and user experience

PDF-XChange Viewer offers a range of features that make it more than just a viewer:

  • Lightning-fast viewing of PDF files – even very large documents
  • Tabbed interface (multiple open documents)
  • Highlighting, underlining, and comments
  • Form filling and adding text fields
  • Extract pages or images
  • Browser integration (Internet Explorer and Firefox – older versions)

The interface is classic and a bit dated, but extremely responsive and stable — even on older PCs.

Free vs. paid version

PDF-XChange Viewer is completely free and was previously available in a Pro edition. Development has now ended, and all Viewer features are freely available. It has been replaced by PDF-XChange Editor, which is recommended for new users.

Platforms and operating systems

PDF-XChange Viewer runs on:

  • Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11
  • No support for Mac, Linux, or mobile
  • Desktop-only, no browser version

The app requires no internet connection and runs 100% locally.

Security and local processing

All PDF processing happens offline, making it suitable for secure use in organizations and on older systems. The Viewer has no cloud integration or data collection — your privacy is fully protected.

Tips for using PDF-XChange Viewer

  • Use the “Typewriter” tool to fill out forms, even when they aren’t interactive
  • Use the “Snapshot Tool” to capture images of selected areas
  • Add comments and notes with colors and stamps – ideal for feedback
  • Enable layer view (PDF layers) if your documents use it
  • Use the right-click menu to quickly highlight or add bookmarks

Is PDF-XChange Viewer still worth it?

Yes — for niche users and older systems. The Viewer is still one of the fastest PDF readers and works perfectly for annotation and printing. For new installations, we recommend PDF-XChange Editor, which continues to be maintained and offers many of the same advantages — plus editing.
