🏺 Pharaoh – Build your own Ancient Egypt in this classic city-building game.

Want to experience what it’s like to build pyramids and lead an ancient society from the ground up? Then Pharaoh is a must-play classic. The game was developed by Sierra and originally released in 1999 as a spiritual successor to Caesar III, but with a full focus on Ancient Egypt.

You begin as a humble herder with a small family, and your mission is clear: become Pharaoh and rule the Nile Valley by building impressive cities, farming the land, trading, waging war, and of course raising monuments.

🧱 Gameplay – Build, trade, and rule

Pharaoh is a classic city-building strategy game where you will:

  • 📈 Build a functioning economy with agriculture, trade, and tax revenue
  • 🚰 Manage water supply from the Nile and prevent flooding
  • 🏛️ Construct temples, palaces, and monuments like pyramids and sphinxes
  • ⚔️ Defend your city from enemies and maintain law and order
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Keep your people happy through food, religion, entertainment, and healthcare

You must constantly balance resource use, production, and your population’s needs to climb the ranks—from a simple city leader to the exalted Pharaoh.

🎨 Graphics and atmosphere

The visuals are 2D, hand-drawn, and wonderfully atmospheric. Music and sound effects draw you straight into Ancient Egypt. Even though the game is old, it still has charm and depth—and works perfectly via, for example, DOSBox or modern re-releases.

🕹️ Also available in a newer version: Pharaoh: A New Era

If you want updated visuals and interface, you can also consider the remastered version Pharaoh: A New Era (2023). But many fans still prefer the original for its classic feel and tactical balance.
