Recuva – Recover deleted files for free on Windows
Recuva is a free and effective tool for recovering deleted files on Windows PCs. Developed by Piriform (the same company behind CCleaner), it’s one of the most user-friendly data recovery utilities—whether you deleted files by mistake, emptied the Recycle Bin, or lost data due to crashes or failing drives.
Top 5 tips and tricks for Recuva
Features and interface
Recuva walks you through the entire recovery process step by step and offers both a simple and an advanced mode, depending on your experience. The program supports:
- Recovery of deleted images, documents, videos, emails, and more
- Deep scan for a more thorough search for lost files
- Recovery from hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, and external disks
- Preview files before recovery
- Option to permanently delete files (secure erase)
The program also comes in a portable version that runs from a USB drive—ideal when you don’t want to install software on the system you’re trying to rescue data from.
How to use Recuva – step by step
1. Choose the type of files you’re looking for
When you open the program for the first time, the wizard starts automatically. You’ll be asked to choose the type of files you want to recover—e.g., images, documents, videos, music, or all file types. Specifying the file type helps Recuva focus the search and find results faster and more accurately.
2. Specify where the files were deleted from
Next, choose where on your computer the files were deleted from. It can be the Recycle Bin, a specific folder, a USB drive, or the entire system. If you’re not sure, select "I’m not sure"—Recuva will scan all available drives on the computer. The more precisely you can specify the location, the faster the scan will be.
3. Enable or skip "Deep Scan"
You now have the option to enable Deep Scan. This is especially useful if the files were deleted a long time ago or if you tried recovering them before without success. Deep Scan takes longer than a normal scan, but it combs the drive more thoroughly and increases the chances of finding more—and more damaged—files.
4. Start the scan and wait for results
When you start the scan, Recuva shows a progress bar indicating how far along it is. Regular scans take only a few minutes, while deeper scans—especially on large hard drives—can take significantly longer. You can stop the scan at any time and view the files that have already been found.
5. Review the found files and evaluate file status
When the scan is finished, you’ll see a list of files the program found. Each file has a status indicator (green, yellow, or red) that shows how likely it is the file can be recovered correctly. Green means the file is in good condition, while red typically means the file is damaged or overwritten.
6. Recover the desired files with one click
Select the files you want to recover and click "Recover." Then choose where to save the recovered files. It’s strongly recommended that you do not save them in the same location they were originally deleted from—to avoid overwriting other deleted files you haven’t restored yet.
Advanced use without the wizard:
If you prefer more control, you can disable the wizard and use the classic layout. Here you get detailed views, advanced filtering, and the option to select specific file types, folders, and view modes. You can also use the "Preview" feature to see, for example, images before deciding to recover them.
Ease of use and language
The interface is intuitive and easy to navigate, and both beginners and power users will feel at home. Support is available via the "Online Help" link, which leads to Piriform’s official support pages.
Alternatives to Recuva
If Recuva doesn’t find what you’re looking for, the following programs are worth trying:
- DiskDigger – Free alternative, especially good for USB drives and memory cards
- 1 – Powerful but less user-friendly; supports many file types
You can find all of these on Download.dk under the data recovery category.
