SuperTuxKart is a kart racer in the spirit of Nintendo’s Mario Kart, where you can battle friends in fun modes like Time Trial, Battle, and Soccer. Download the free Mac version!

Have you owned a GameCube, a Wii, or another Nintendo console? If so, there’s a good chance you’ve tried one of Nintendo’s fantastic Mario Kart games. SuperTuxKart is a free, open-source game that’s very similar. Here, however, you drive as the Linux penguin Tux and other well-known characters from the open-source world. The game includes many different modes with unique challenges, and you can download it completely free for macOS. It even supports multiple languages, including English.

Karts with unique abilities

Just like in Mario Kart, there are lots of different karts and characters to choose from. If you’re into open-source software, you’ll recognize many of the characters. For example, you can race as the GIMP mascot, Wilber.

If you play SuperTuxKart long enough to really master it, you’ll likely notice that different karts suit specific playstyles. Each one stands out with different top speed, weight, acceleration, and nitro performance.

If you’re a beginner, we recommend choosing one of the more balanced karts. That’s the case if you drive the game’s main character, Tux. Our impression is that this kart is designed to be good at a bit of everything.

Game modes

SuperTuxKart offers many different game modes, and each asks you to do something unique to win. For example, there’s “Normal Race,” where you can grab weapon boxes and fire items at others to pull ahead. There’s also “Time Trial,” where weapons aren’t allowed, so it’s all about clean driving to set the best time.

There’s also a Soccer mode, where all players are split into two teams and the goal, of course, is to push the ball into the net.

You can also play the following modes: Follow the Leader, Battle, Egg Hunt, Race with Ghost Replay, and Story Mode. In the latter, you progress through a light narrative.

It’s also worth noting that you can connect SuperTuxKart to the internet and play online. This requires creating an online account in the game. We haven’t tested this part ourselves.

Differences between the Mac and Windows versions?

Generally, you shouldn’t experience any major differences between the Mac and Windows versions. Our impression is that when the game is updated, it’s updated across all supported operating systems at the same time. So we expect SuperTuxKart to run more or less the same on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

This also means that if you have different computers in your home, SuperTuxKart will run on all of them.

Our verdict

In short, we think SuperTuxKart is a very good game. It’s fun and challenging at the same time, and it’s genuinely impressive that it’s completely free.

If we’re being a bit critical, SuperTuxKart may not quite measure up to Mario Kart. But that’s also a high bar, and no one is making money from SuperTuxKart. It’s a free game that exists because dedicated developers volunteer their time.
