Slide down snow- and ice-covered mountains in Tux Racer for Windows and Linux — free download!
Here at Holyfile, we’re big fans of Tux the penguin, who also happens to be the official mascot of the Linux kernel. You’ll find this character in many free and open-source games, including Tux Racer, which we cover on this page. As noted toward the bottom of the page, you may want to try Extreme Tux Racer instead, as it’s a newer and better version.

In this racing game, you guide Tux through beautiful snowy landscapes with slick sheets of ice. Since the game is more than 20 years old, the graphics aren’t exactly impressive anymore, but it’s still a solid experience. You can start by practicing on the "Practice" courses, and you can also win trophies in the game’s various tournaments. Because Tux Racer is all about getting the best time, you can’t race against other characters, which is a big downside in our view.
If you’re missing multiplayer features, we recommend SuperTuxKart instead. This is another free game featuring Tux the Linux penguin, where you can race both other players and computer-controlled opponents. In short, it’s very similar to Nintendo’s Mario Kart games, and you can read our review by following this link.
Note: We tested Tux Racer on a PC running Windows 11, and we can confirm it still works despite being a very old game. Even so, we generally recommend downloading Extreme Tux Racer instead, as it’s a newer and improved edition of Tux Racer.
