Worms – Classic chaos with battle-ready worms
Worms from Team17 is a turn-based strategy game packed with humor, explosive action, and tactical thinking. First released in 1995, it quickly became a cult classic, and many still consider it one of the most iconic examples of turn-based multiplayer chaos. We've tested Worms, and it still absolutely holds up in 2026!
Gameplay and features

In Worms, you command a small squad of worms with big weapons. Each worm takes a turn, letting you move, aim, and fire everything from bazookas and cluster bombs to more absurd weapons like the Holy Hand Grenade, exploding sheep, and banana bombs. The game is equal parts tactics and comedy, and a big part of the charm is how your own mistakes can lead to ridiculous, unpredictable results.
The demo version you can download here gives you a taste of the original chaos, with access to both single-player vs. the AI and local multiplayer.
Graphics and design

The 1995-era Worms visuals are colorful and simple, yet packed with charm. The lively animations give each little worm character, and the map design—with destructible landscapes—makes every match unique. The sound effects and the worms’ quips are memorable, giving the game a personality all its own.
Challenges and controls
The controls are straightforward, but real precision takes patience and practice. Movement, jumping, and aiming are quick to learn, yet the interplay of wind conditions, throwing technique, and timing is what truly separates newcomers from veterans. Weapons like the bazooka and grenades will punish imprecise shots if you don’t account for wind. During our play sessions, we had several moments where an otherwise perfect shot went way off due to a sudden wind shift.
At the same time, the game is built so both beginners and seasoned players can join in. You can adjust AI difficulty, making it easy to start slow—or turn the challenge up once you’ve got the mechanics down. That rare balance of accessibility and depth means there’s always something new to master.
The game's strengths and weaknesses
Worms is still worth playing, especially if you want a strategy game with a twist. It’s easy to learn, hard to master—and impossible not to laugh at. The demo naturally limits the content, and modern players may miss online multiplayer and higher resolutions.
Top 5 tips for Worms
Use the terrain proactively
The terrain is a weapon in itself. Dig tunnels, blast holes, or make enemy worms drop into the water. In our playthroughs, well-placed shots at the ground were often more effective than direct hits.
Use the wind to your advantage
Wind direction heavily affects bazookas, grenades, and airstrikes. Spend a second reading the wind before you fire—small tweaks can be the difference between total failure and a perfect hit.
Secure the high ground
Worms placed up high have better visibility and are harder to hit. Enemies are also easier to knock off the map. In practice, height gives both offensive and defensive advantages.
Learn to bypass your own mines
Mines don’t have to be a death trap for you. With precise jumps, rope work, or short movements you can slip past them unharmed—and lure enemies into the same trap later.
Experiment with the chaotic weapons
Some weapons seem unpredictable, but that chaos can flip a losing match. Test different tools in safe spots—many of the best tactics are happy accidents.
