NRK Radio – Norwegian radio and podcasts

NRK Radio – High-quality Norwegian radio and podcasts

NRK Radio is the official app from Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK) and Norway’s answer to DR Lyd or Sveriges Radio Play. The app brings all NRK radio stations, podcasts, and on-demand programs together in one ad-free experience.

We tested NRK Radio on both iPhone and Android and experienced impressively stable playback, fast navigation, and high audio quality — whether we listened live or offline.

Features and user experience

The NRK Radio home screen; the bottom menu lets you explore content or start streaming immediately.

The app provides access to all nationwide NRK stations such as P1, P2, P3, P13, and NRK Nyheter — plus the many regional P1 stations across Norway.

It also includes a huge library of podcasts – from true crime and culture to children’s content and satire. We especially tested the NRK series “Hele historien” and “Ekko samfunnspodden,” which played flawlessly and remembered our progress across devices.

The offline feature works flawlessly. You can download shows and podcasts in high quality and play them without an internet connection. That makes NRK Radio perfect for travel, the mountains, or areas with poor coverage.

Design and usability

The NRK Radio interface is clean, modern, and quick to navigate. We especially like the dark background that highlights cover art and makes the app comfortable to use in low-light environments.

The search is accurate — you can easily find shows, hosts, and topics. There’s also a handy “Continue Listening” section so you can always resume where you left off.

The app also supports CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can listen safely while driving. In our in-car tests, voice control via Siri and Google Assistant worked great.

Stability and performance

We listened to NRK P1 in NRK Radio. The first time you pick a station, you can select a local region. We chose Telemark.

NRK Radio runs reliably on both iOS and Android. We experienced no crashes, stutter, or delays, even when switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile networks.
The app is generally faster than SR Play and DR Lyd, especially when jumping between live and archive content.

Data usage is low, and you can manually adjust audio quality if you’re on cellular data.

Comparison with SR Play and DR Lyd

NRK Radio is very similar to SR Play in structure and features but feels a bit more modern and technically stable.
Compared with DR Lyd, NRK Radio focuses more on radio and fewer on‑demand series, but offers higher audio quality and more regional stations.

In Denmark, the app gives you access to all Norwegian radio and podcasts without restrictions — ideal for language learners, Nordics, or Danes with ties to Norway.
