Sacred 2 is still one of the most charming action RPGs for loot-hungry players

Sacred 2 is a sprawling fantasy action RPG where you explore the realm of Ancaria, gather loot, develop your hero, and battle everything from undead monsters to magical creatures and brutal bosses.

The story centers on the mysterious T-Energy, which has shaped life, magic, and power in Ancaria for millennia. When the High Elves lose control of it, the realm is thrown into chaos, war, and ruin. As a player, you choose from several heroes and drager (set out) into a vast open fantasy world, where every quest, every fight, and every piece of gear brings you closer to deciding Ancaria’s fate.

We tested Sacred 2 on a Windows 11 PC, and the first thing that struck us wasn’t the graphics, but the sheer size of the game. Ancaria still feels surprisingly big, especially if you’re coming from newer action RPGs where the world is often more tightly directed. Here you get masser af frihed, mange quests (lots of freedom, plenty of quests) and a slightly old-school, cozy RPG vibe that fans of Diablo, Titan Quest, and Grim Dawn will recognize.

A large open world packed with loot

In our Sacred 2 test, we tried the High Elf class among others. You can customize your character, pick a deity, select difficulty, and choose campaign type before the adventure in Ancaria begins.

Sacred 2 doesn’t hold your hand. You’re dropped into a stort fantasylandskab (vast fantasy landscape) of towns, forests, deserts, mountains, caves, and hostile camps, and there’s almost always something to pick up, investigate, or fight.

Combat is classic action RPG: you click, attack, use abilities, and samler bedre våben og rustninger (collect better weapons and armor). It sounds simple, but the game quickly finds its own rhythm because each class plays differently. Some excel at ranged combat, others are heavy melee brutes, and a few require patience before they truly shine.

The loot system is one of the big grunde til (reasons why) Sacred 2 still works so well. New weapons, rings, armor, and magical items drop constantly, and it’s hard not to take just one more quest to see if the next enemy drops something better. During our test, we often spent more time comparing gear than planned — which is a very good sign for this kind of game.

Sacred 2 Gold or Sacred 2 Remaster?

The older edition is typically known as Sacred 2 Gold, which includes Sacred 2: Fallen Angel and the Ice & Blood expansion. It’s still relevant if you want the original experience, but today Sacred 2 Remaster is the most obvious choice for new players because it’s built for modern platforms and wraps everything into a more up-to-date package. On Steam, Sacred 2 Gold is described as the base game plus Ice & Blood, while the Remaster is positioned as a modernized return to Ancaria with quests, dungeons, and deep character progression.

If you already own Sacred 2 Gold, the original can still be worth playing. But if you’re downloading Sacred 2 today, you should generally pick the official Remaster or buy from a legitimate digital store. It’s easier, safer, and far better than messing with old installation files from sketchy archives.

How Sacred 2 feels today

Sacred 2 still has a special charm, but don’t expect it to feel brand-new. Animations can be a bit stiff, the UI isn’t always elegant, and some systems aren’t explained as smoothly as in modern RPGs.

On the other hand, the game has something many newer titles lack: a sense of adventure. There’s a great feeling of riding out into the world just to see what happens. A random side path might lead to a cave, a new quest, a pack of enemies, or a drop that completely changes your build. Those little moments make Sacred 2 worth revisiting.

The music and atmosphere help a lot, too. Ancaria is colorful, a bit kitschy, and very classic fantasy. It’s not as dark as Diablo — it’s more adventurous and open. That suits players who want an action RPG with loot and combat without everything being grim and brutal all the time.

Grab Sacred 2 from an official storefront to avoid old, unsafe installers. The most obvious place today is the Steam page for Sacred 2 Remaster.

Who should play Sacred 2?

Sacred 2 is ideal if you enjoy big fantasy worlds, loot, character building, and classic action RPG combat. It’s not the most polished game in the genre, but it offers tons of content and a unique blend of open world and hack-and-slash.

If you expect a modern, fast, tightly directed RPG with cinematic cutscenes, Sacred 2 may feel a bit old-school. But if you miss RPGs where you can disappear into a huge world for hours, it’s still a strong experience.

Top 5 tips for Sacred 2

Tip 1

Pick a class that matches your playstyle

Don’t start with the hero that just looks coolest. Sacred 2 is more fun when you choose a character that fits how you like to play. Do you prefer ranged attacks, front-line tanking, or experimenting with magic?

Tip 2

Don’t loot everything mindlessly

Sacred 2 throws a lot of loot at you. Focus on gear that actually improves your build and sell the rest as you go. Otherwise, you’ll spend more time in your inventory than out in Ancaria.

Tip 3

Use the map actively

Ancaria is huge, and it’s easy to lose your bearings. Check the map often, especially when you have multiple active quests. It saves time and makes it easier to stack objectives in the same area.

Tip 4

Avoid spreading your skills too thin

It’s tempting to try a bit of everything, but Sacred 2 rewards focused builds. Pick a few core abilities and power them up before you experiment broadly.

Tip 5

Save often, especially before big fights

Even modern releases are more convenient than old disc installs, Sacred 2 can still surprise you with tough enemies. Save before bosses, dungeons, and long trips away from towns.

A classic fantasy RPG with plenty of personality

Sacred 2 isn’t perfect, but it offers what still makes it worth playing: a big world, meaningful class choices, tons of loot, and an adventurous spirit that doesn’t try to imitate every other action RPG.

The Remaster makes the most sense today if you want to experience Sacred 2 on a modern PC. The original still carries nostalgic value, but new players should choose an official digital release over old, unofficial downloads.
